Nail in winter tyre

Hi All,

I have a spare set of 18" wheels with Continental Wintercontact 255/55/ R18 tyres, both supplied by BMW.

I have noticed that 1 of them has gained a nail straight through the centre of the tread - no loss of pressure at the moment and I've left the nail in situ. These wheels are currently off the car.

Can I get the tyre repaired? I know many tyre fitters won't repair a run flat, but are these run flats? Also, if they are, I think they're only sidewall strengthened so is a repair a possibility?

If in doubt and if you have receipt check with dealer.

I doubt Bmw would sell wheels with run flat  tyres for an E53 as they were never fitted or optioned on same.


They should have SSR marked on them if conti runflats.

If they are definitely SSR runflat then maybe call continental  customer support assuming dealer can't assist

Hi Ian,

I have a repair kit I carry in the car, and its saved my bacon many times.

It consists of some glue rubber goo, a plunger, rubber threads, and a CO2 inflator...

You pull out the nail, rough up the hole with one plunger,
inset the rubber thread on the giant darning needle plunger,
then coat the thread and the hole with rubber solution & stuff the thread into the tyre with the giant need, yank out the needle, crop off the excess rubber thread....
The loop of the rubber thread stops it from coming out of the tyre & the rubber solution seals the job.
Then inflate the tyre & bugger off    Job done.. 

I have several repairs on my tyres over the last few years & have done many thousands of miles with no problems.
These kits are about £10>£15 per kit on Flea-Bay.... I got 2 kits to ensure I had a non-ending supply of tyre fixings.

I keep the CO2 inflator bits in case its pissing with rain on the side of the motor-way & I need a rapid inflation job done lol

Some people regard these kits as a temporary repair, but I have found them to last years with no hint of failure... and are a God-send If you do off-roading with lots of punctures.

Ok - proper tyres then.

A decent repair and rebalance likely £10 -20 depending on repairer and payment method
