Moving from E53 to E70

Post by entropy » Mon Apr 27, 2015 4:16 pm

We are contemplating moving up from E53 to E70 and wondered if anyone had done it had any reviews? i.e. is it a worthy upgrade?

I don't see the point in going to the E53 facelift as its basically the same car as mine but 10 grand more.

Am I right in thinking that E70 is 2009 - 2013? was there a facelift E70?

E70 is 2007 to 2013.  LCI model released in 2010 - White LED angel eyes are the easiest 'how to spot one' tip.  Replaced by the F15 X5 in late 2013.

If your budget can stretch to an LCI X5 you will get a cleaner, more powerful engine.  8-speed gearbox.  Updated iDrive.  Bluetooth media streaming etc.

I went from a facelifted E53 to the 2011 model year X6 and have been very pleased, as have everyone on here who went to the X5 AFAIK.

I was typing this while X5Sport was posting, and I see my model years are slightly different (I think it was Nov 2006 and Oct 2009 as stated below. I'm pretty sure the facelift was Oct 2009 as I had one.

E70 is 2006-2013 with a facelift in Oct 2009. Facelift improvements included a new version of the idrive (with more buttons to press). Some models benefitted from an 8 speed transmission (up from 6) in 2011.

I never had an E53 but did have a facelift E70, so I can't tell you how much better the E70 was. I can tell you
it was a lovely car and
that if searching for an example I'd say 35d or 40d had plenty of punch,
get one with a pano sunroof purely because the interior feels much lighter that way but check it works,
business stereo or better (as the standard is rubbish)

Good luck

It'll be allright in the end. If it isn't allright it isn't the end

Cheers Guys, I shall start the search.

The only thing that worries me is that i've spent so much on fixing this one up that I don't want to start again.

In general are the rear bushes and suspension arms made to last a bit better on the E70? What about parking sensors?

I went from model years rather than calendar ones as the in country arrival dates can be very different on some BMW/Mini models, but the calendar dates are right.

They're made of the same stuff! So suspension arms ball joints bushes etc may need some attention depending on milage, I sold my 5 series having replaced all of the above and it was driving like a new car, bought my E53 and spent £600 on brake/ suspension and service parts in order to make it drive and handle like new, that was the cost of the parts as I fitted them myself, so there's always going to be the chance you'll need to spend some cash in order to bring it up to the standard you wish, you might want to look for one which the previous owner has already done just that  already, that's the downside of upgrading a car unfortunately

£10k - Are these AUC's you are looking at? I went from a pre-facelift E53 to an E70 for less than £10k but thhat was private sale and private purchase.

I would say that the 2 cars are worlds apart in almost every department from an owner/driver's POV (not sure how similar they are mechanically but they feel different).

The E70 felt and looks so much newer, and drives like a newer car too. The interior is massive change and much more upto date, even though I have the old idrve and not the new (LCI) style, it still felt like a world away from the ancient mk3/4 systems.

You will not regret it at all. The only thing I miss is my old 4.6is power and sound, as i'm now in a 3.0d  :( But if you are currently in an E53 3.0d/4.4i it is a no brainer if funds allow.

I would say think very carefully about the alloy wheels. I have 20" on E70 LCI sports suspension and it is a very firm ride. I currently have a 1 series with 16" RTF's and the ride is much more compliant. I dont understand why bmw want to fit 20" low profile RFTs to an SUV which should be comfortable as to a pure sports car such as the 911. So try both 19" and 20" tyres before you commit.

I've just traded my 2005 3.0d Sport in... at just short of 180k miles, thought it was time for a change. I didn't get much for it, but then again it owed me nothing.

I now have a 2008 3.0sd. Love it. It's on 20s, I'm surprised how compliant the ride is. If I could just get my iPhone 6 to work with the iDrive properly I'd be even happier!

Simon :)
