Gear selector noise

Post by ex540d » Sat Mar 21, 2015 11:07 am

Hello,

In November 2014 i bought a November 2010 Bmw X5 40d M sport from a Bmw dealership. The car has covered 39,000 and has just developed a noise when selecting P,R,N and drive. After you select something such as Drive it makes a quick noise like if you drag your finger nails across a piece of paper.

Is it anything to worry about? Should i get it booked in ?

Cheers

Under warranty?

If so get it in and the part replaced.  That part is expensive as the whole selector unit has to be changed if it is that making the noise.

Yes its under approved used warranty. Is it something serious do you think ?
The dealership have just ordered me a set of replacement wheels so when it goes back i will ask them to check it out.

It probably isn't but it might be an early sign of a problem developing.  Someone else on the forum has just had a problem with their selector and it was several £hundred to replace as it is a complete unit.

Much better to have BMW pay than you.. :)

Mine does this as well. I assumed it was some sort of servo, as it sounds like an electric motor whirring momentarily. Should this be totally silent?

Apart from the selector lock engaging/disengaging (8 speed), which is a loud click, mine certainly is.

Let me know what the dealer says ex540. My local dealers are a bunch of donkeys, so any ammunition, if needed, would be welcome.

Yes that's the noise Riggie !
A friend of mine owns a garage and he owns a 59 Plate X5 and he has only covered 6800 miles !
I took the car to him yesterday and asked what he though and he said that his car does the same thing.
Its just strange that it never did it before but now it does.

I will ask Bmw when it goes back in for its replacement wheels. I do not know how long that will be because the wheels have just been ordered yesterday and apparently they are on back order so it might be a while yet.

Cheers

Mine has done it from when I bought it with 38k miles. Now on 47k. Everything works fine and Imthought that the noise was normal. I spoke to a friend today who has a 320D Sport auto and he says that makes a similar noise when moving the selector.

I'll keep an eye out for any update, as my loval dealer will say it's fine even when it isn't!
