And they might have now overfilled it!  Sounds like a Dealer trying anything to avoid actually sorting the problem out.  Ask them if that is the correct procedure for dealing with those fault codes as defined by BMW in the service system - and get them to prove it to you.

I'd almost bet that isn't the correct procedure.  It would just be too convenient for the box to fail just out of warranty and for them to walk away!  I'm just very suspicious of the action taken and the service drone' comments.  It all points (to me) at dealer cost avoidance.

Stay on their case, or get another Dealer to look at it.  You won't get any help from BMW GB as they are really uninterested in helping any customers and will duck the whole thing by sending you back to the supplying dealer.

I agree Richard, they have tested the x5 for three days now and the fault according to them hasn't reappeared they said will give it another 2 weeks driving to see if it comes back but as some weeks it doesn't get driven that's  not a lot of good so will press for a thousand miles instead

Will ask them tomorrow for fault procedure on those codes

Richard, how would they know that the gearbox oil was low ?

AFAIK they gave to take the plug out of the gearbox whilst the car is in the air, but that was on the E53 and I'm assuming the process is the same on the E70.

There might now be a way of telling from the on board diagnostics, or they may just be using the good old - 'try this and see if it gets the Owner out of our hair until the warranty runs out' approach.... >:(

GREAT NEWS, BMW have agreed to pay for a re manufactured gearbox, thought they would try and get out of it but no problem, service engineer at Dick Lovett was very helpful and sorted it all out and also got a courtesy car sorted as he knew I was having problems with no wheels.

Result, has put a little bit of faith back in the dealers and the warranty they provide.

Will let you know more when I get it back next week so far so good.
Thanks for the input/advice x5sport much appreciated.

Today I went to Dick Lovett Hungerford to pick up the X5 with the new automatic gearbox fitted, I know some stealers get some stick for various reasons, have to say the senior service assistant Mr.Hynes has been really helpful everything has been done on time and I'm pleased with the outcome as I've only had to pay the excess of  £250 as I had a BMW insured warranty, which they honoured with no hesitation.

Yes, I took a BMW extended warranty out at £1200 seems cheap now considering recent events. :) :) :)

After mine failed, I opted to take the extended warranty on my X6 too.  As you say, it only needs one failure such as this and several policy years are covered in one hit.  The 8-speed box is a frightening price I'm told, as is the active rear diff fitted to all X6s.

@X5Sport I can imagine an 8 speed box would be hellishly expensive, you just never know what will go bang,so I
supposed you have to cover all bases just in case.

@celica, yes I believe it does, when my gearbox was faulty and jumped out of gear in sport mode it went to neutral,I think it's a safety feature.so I was told.
