Air Filter Change

Post by PioneerSSM » Sat Apr 11, 2015 6:12 pm

    • HI All
Newby first posting on this part of the forum, and needing some advice and help. Any comment regarding my query would also be welcome.
I took delivery of my X5 last week. Its a Stratstone used car and comes with the usual dealer warranty etc. I was checking the oil level after a clean, (normal weekly checks for me) when I discovered that the air intake plastic pipe was loose and wobbling about. Obviously it had somehow become detached from its housing.
Further inspection under the large BMW labeled cover confirmed my suspicion, and the loose peice was simple reinserted.
However upon removing the cover I was greeted with the sight of an air filter looking very much the worse for ware. See attached pics.
Now is my opinion that the said air intake pipe has been detached for some time, hence the build up of debris on that part of the air filter.
      My questions are this:
Is this amount of debris normal for a X5 filter to capture during a normal time between replacement?
What's the schedule for filter changes?
Will this have caused any lasting damage?
Is there anything I need to be on the lookout for regarding this?

So much for the 102 point pre customer delivery inspection check.

The cars going in next week for a filter change and a few other minor odd and ends.

Any advice on what to ask the dealer would be welcome.

      Thanks

:hi: to the Forum.

Which version of the E70, year, mileage etc.

The 'quality' of the BMW AUC pre-delivery inspections varies enormously with some dealers making little effort.  It seems your dealer may be in that block....or the technician couldn't be bothered.

Whichever it is, I would be all over them and demand that they do the checks all over again, and do them properly.  There have been too many reported instances of poor workmanship and too many dealers appearing to rely on the warranty to fix things as it's cheaper for them.

Hi Lifer
It's 60 plate with 55k. It's my first foray into BMW and I'd hoped for a much greater standard of workmanship/attention to detail. Alas so far, my hopes have been dashed.
I'm booked in for next week for other odds n ends, it's my intention to request a re check of everything, if this was missed, what else have I yet to find?

BMW Dealers are just car dealers, no different to most others.

Just keep on their backs and don't let them fob you off.  If they can't check a filter then it raises questions about the state of the oil, brake fluid, filters etc.

Check every function, go through the service checks in the iDrive (details in the handbook), electrics, tyres, brake pads, leaks.  You name it, check it works.
