MkIV Navigation DVD updates

Post by X5Sport » Thu Jan 06, 2011 10:06 pm

Has nyone heard if BMW in Europe are about to discontinue production of the DVD map database discs anytime soon? I gather the trade-in offer seems to have been stopped but I'm wondering if they're going to pull the plug altogether given that no current models use the MkIV system meaning there must be a limit for ongoing map support too.

Our E53 has a 2008 DVD in use, so it may be time for a change, but I can wait a while given the new road between Bedford and M1/Jcn13 has only just opened and it would be nice to at least have that on the disc. I don't have it on the X6 either which confuses the hell out of the Nav system. One day expect a voice to say "Sod it. Go your own blasted way then!" :?

I came across a remark that the 2011v1 might be the last, but can't find any confirmations anywhere and my friendly dealer contact is on holiday. Anyone else heard anything along these lines?

I haven't heard about BMW discontinuing the DVDs for our sat navs although it wouldn't surprise me if they were. Are they hard disk based on the newer models now?

I've got the 2011 disk which anyone can have a copy of whenever there is next a meet near the south coast :roundel:
Curr. - Silverstone II F85
Prev. - E70 4.0D M Sport
E53 3.0D Sport Facelift - Estoril Blue

The very latest models with the CIC IDrive and 'Pro' nav have an 80GB hard disk and I'm told can only be updated by the dealer as it's a huge download - but I only have the latter bit anecdotally.

It is not just BMW that uses the disks though, it is Navteq that creates the data for a number of car manufactures.

I would be surprised if they would cut that revenue stream for the sake of creating some DVD images.

I priced an update to mine up at the dealers a few weeks ago and it was over £200  which is just crazy and a total and complete rip-off for all the reasons in my previous posts. And they aren't doing the trade-in-your-old-disc-plus-£99 offer apparently - it has "vanished" off their system.
Unless a more reasonable plan is made by BMW to support all these units, I can certainly see the sales of "aftermarket" discs soaring for reasons entirely the fault of BMW / Navteq, not the consumers who would have bought a reasonably priced, market-related update.

I know part of the cost used to be for the TMC licence (you used to be able to buy two versions, with or without - for those with no TMC on board) but I can't imagine that even comes close to adding up to more than a few quid with so many systems now operating with TMC. Navteq need to have a real look at this, because their discs for other manufacturers are almost as expensive - although no doubt BMW 'adds value' - (their term not mine) to justify the expense. £200 is far too high given the majority of the data will not be changing from disc to disc.

Did you also check the price with Navteq directly?

I have not found the exact maps we have now, but just selecing X5, correct year etc comes up with £99 on their website. As said, the maps does not seem to be the same as it does not seem to cover the whole of Europe.

Navteq used to only offer a CD version, the current one is 10CDs for £169. The DVD version for BMW is only available - from BMW :headbang:

ah, that might explain why they only sell small parts of Europe if they only put it on a CD ...

My local Dealer has the Europe High 2011.1 for £175.01. They no longer have the part-ex option either......

He's heard nothing about the DVD being discontinued, but did add that Dealers are almost always the last to know!!
