4.0d or 3.0d

Hi all,

I have just purchased my fourth X5 a low mileage 4.0d M-Sport E70 LCI.  Prior to this I have owned two E53's and have just sold my 2008 E70 3.0 SD M-Sport in which I managed to rack up 100,000 miles over the last 7 years.

Having driven the 4.0d for a few hundred miles now I am interested to know how everybody else gets on with the twin turbo engine in real world conditions.  Compared to the 3.0 SD my new car feels like it always 'chomping at the bit' and wanting to rev more and go faster then I am usually going.  I don't know whether it is the 8 speed gearbox or the extra horsepower but it never seems happy unless it is accelerating or galloping along at 70 mph plus.  This seems to make it feel a bit twitchy rather than the cruising pace I got used to in the 3.0.

I was so intrigued at the difference that I drove them back to back over the weekend and discovered that at 2,000 rpm the 3.0SD was doing about 70 mph whereas the 4.0d was pushing 85 mph.

Don't get me wrong I like a 'spirited' drive I used to have a 635d and now own a Mercedes SL500 and a Cooper S for when I want to go a bit quicker - I am just struggling to 'love' the power delivery 4.0d at the moment.

Does anyone else feel the same ?

Are you in M/S mode or normal auto? Also you can re-set so it can learn your driving style, I think it's a case of putting the accelerator down fully for about 5 or 10 seconds when in 'radio mode' without the engine on.

BTW, mine is a 2010 40d and I can plod along or boot it but they do learn the recent driving style and give revs to suit.

I went from a 30d E53 to a 40d X6 and have no trouble with power delivery.  It will lope along happily at any speed I choose and I can't say I ever find it 'champing at the bit'.  Power delivery is smoother than my E53 and it does reach the horizon rather quicker that I might be watching for.

I too have a 40d and have also noticed the car feels more comfortable at higher speeds, it will cruise along at 30 but on a decent the gearbox will drop down looking for me accelerate. I might reset the gearbox memory like Barney suggests. Pulling away froma stand still is not as effortless as my 535d though, so much so it made me question if there were two turbo under the X5 hood (there are)!

Might have something to do with the several hundred kilos of extra weight on the X5......    It might just slow you down a bit you might think.

If I want a 'quicker' take off I just flip the paddles a couple of clicks and whoosh :drive:
