DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)
Re: DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)
I know an Indy who poured what I think was some paint thinner in the petrol tank.
Never had an issue since..

[/quote]I have heard thinners in the tank can help clean out the CAT on a petrol but I would never put it in a diesel.
Thinners would probably lower the lubrication level of the fuel and this is not good for very high pressure diesel fuel pumps or injectors.

Interesting.
Ive just had this pop up on my dash...
"Particle Filter! Possible to continue journey..."
Do i now need to try and force a regen.? IE take it for a run on the M way at high revs.?
Strangley enough its just come on after i put some Shell V power in the tank...Thinking i was giving it a treat... ::) ::) ::)
I dont have a code scanner, so i dont know the codes...

According to a bit of research, try this:
"Reaching the optimum temperature is the key to ensuring that your car "regenerates". Optimum conditions for regeneration are achieved by travelling at 60 km/h (37.2 Mph) with engine revs above 2000 rpm for around 10-15 minutes.
If this does not work then you need to go to a BMW Dealer who can get the car to do a 'forced regen' via their specialist DIS software. This should be done as soon as possible in order to give the system as good a chance as possible to sort itself as the alternative is a new DPF!"

Oh well.
Ive got my car booked in at the local indie, for a investigation. On Monday...
They think it might just need a forced regen doing....
Ill report back, as and when...

Update..
Just got my car back.
And all I can say is,, it feels like a new car again.. Full of punch and urgency..
They did a forced regen and put a cleaner into the dpf... Removed the offending soot etc....
I was told that occasionally when the car does its regen, it can sometimes be not enough as over time the dpf soot builds up, ie the soot "saturation" level is too high, and this is when you need a professional dpf clean...
This seems to be whats happened in my case..
Lets hope it stays this way now....

Glad it's sorted, and for a lot less than a new DPF!

Re: DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)
Hi All,
Mine has came up with service due, when going into the info/menus on the dash it said DPF service due, I have put Wynns DPF cleaner in today (has 3/4 tank of diesel in it) if I run it for a few days will the service light go off if the DPF cleans up or am I best to try and get somebody to reset it after a few days and see if the service comes back up? I presume I will know the cleaner fluid has worked when I am a bit eager with the right foot and see dark clouds behind me? There was me thinking buying an 08 X5 with less than 30k miles on clock was a good idea? The car does seem sluggish but only when cold, I just put it down to colder weather :-[

Re: DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)
If the car has been used in short journeys in its previous life then the DPF will start to block up. It needs a high speed run of not less than 20 minutes at a minimum of 40mph AFTER the car has warmed up to get the exhaust hot enough to start the regen/clean up cycle.
Never used anything like Wynn's so can't tell you what to expect from it. If you are not convinced it is working then a Dealer can force the car to go into a regen cycle.

Re: DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)
Thanks for the info X5Sport, much appreciated, took long way home from work tonight with about 12 miles dual carriageway so kept revs about 2.5-3k for about 15m then through edge of town then some "spirited B road driving for another 15m, keeping revs above 2.5k how long does the regeneration take to complete? And how would I know if it starts a regeneration cycle? For a 2 tonne vehicle it handles quite well on the B roads
I wonder because it is coming up due service for DPF it maybe wouldn't carry out a regeneration cycle? Any thoughts?

Re: DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)
Other than hearing all the fans running when you pull up, I don't think there is an obvious way to know if the DPF regen has started. It's the only way I know mine is doing it. Sometimes you can get an odd 'hot' smell but not always. On a couple of occasions I have got home and switched off and the engine fans have gone on running for 10 mins or so to make sure the exhaust has fully cooled. Our Mini Countryman used to do the same when it was running a regen cycle.
The regen runs every few hundred miles regardless of service state, and just requires the car to be hit enough. It may be that yours actually wants a forced regen for some reason - perhaps a regen didn't completely sort out the soot. As long as no warnings come on it should be that is all that is required. It's when the warning messages and gongs go that things get more urgent.

I used this a few days ago, I just don't know if the car will reset itself if the DPF has cleared or not

Re: DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)
I had the DPF problem for a couple of months until i took it to a garage in London Bridge and they basically put it into regen and drove it to Brighton and back. Cost about 60-70 pounds and half a tank of fuel, not bad I think. SW Garage. Since then no problems.
Also add Wynss DPF cleaner every month, for london driving, this lowers the combustion temperature so that dpf passive regen can happen more frequently.
Bought BMWhat app to monitor the soot load in the dpf filter (and register the new battery)
I could not find clear guide online when i had the problem. So i'm putting down what i did hope it helps someone.
