Stumped with Bluetooth retrofit

My car's an 07/2001 3.0D Sport, and it came with the Motorolla/BMW phone built into the armrest and Nav. I want to upgrade to Bluetooth. I took some shots of what I have at the moment:






I originally planned to follow this install based on having an SA620 SES module, but after checking the part no shown below (84216907520) I have and SA632




I did some further research and found this guide, however I'm still baffled based on not really knowing the bits I already have.

Any suggestions?

The OEM Bluetooth retrofit costs a fortune and adds very little value to the car, given that its an older pre-facelift in any case, so you need to decide if the considerable outlay and its complexity is worth it on a 2001 car. You can achieve exactly the same result, and still keep the Motorola wired system intact for when you sell the car someday, with an inexpensive Parrot kit. With the OEM way, you could easily spend over £1000 which seems crazy on a car of that age.

I know OEM is nice, but BMW bluetooth is notoriously awkward in vehicles of that age and will definitely not be cost effective unless of course you don't care about the cost involved. The Motorola system is a good one and you can just redirect your phone to the Motorola wired phone, alternatively the Parrot kit is far less complex and expensive and works very well.

I know you are looking for other answers, not specifically these, so excuse the interjection, but its made with the best of intentions. All the best with whatever method you choose

Thanks mate. I was hoping to just pop in the big silver Bluetooth box plus the aerial and have it up and running (as per the retrofit links) which should only cost me about £100 (my local breaker has the bits) as I really fancied having the phone bits on my nav screen.

I have looked at maybe getting a Parrot (the MKi9200) but I couldn't find a retrofit anywhere for an X5 with Nav and DSP — I'm not too keen on leaving it with an installer to be honest as I prefer to do these things properly myself.

Anyone here installed an aftermarket kit on a similar spec?

Hi,
I installed a parrot ck3100 in mine. I have installed the same unit on many cars before. The trick initially was to get the correct cable that goes behind the headunit. After that, the most difficult thing was the removal of the glovebox (difficult only because i didn't know how to do it). Apart from that, it was an easy job which took about 1 hour from start to finish. And the good thing with the X as opposed to other cars is that there is loads of space to put the wires without squeezing them.

I prior read that the CK3000 is one to go for if looking for a Parrott & wheel functions too. I merely divert my mobile to my motorola hard wired phone, (I dont currently use the car for significant business miles), but would probably go parrott if so motivated.

I agree with Condor. OE is good to have but costs can be prohibitive. Whatever is specifically required is dependant on specific age of car & whether it has bluetooth prep or not, (afaik this was only on newer cars than yours - but do check).

If going OE bluetooth where do you stop ? The cost to fully modernise a 2001 comms pack with OE bluetooth, MK4 3D Nav, Digital TV Tuner, Ipod interface & a reverse camera is likely to be over £2k or maybe circa £3k if you add a decent DVD movie/media &/or console set up with quality screens.

If funds allow it could make far more cost effective sense to simply change the whole car for a newer one unless happy to source all bits secondhand, fit yourself & offset costs later by stripping car down prior to sale & selling new bits.

These forums are heavy on content from folk who carry out upgrades & mods & I dont want to upset them. I am often genuinely impressed by what others achieve but as boring as it may sound I have made maintenance & reducing future loss my spending priority, ( non car financial rightful priorities also a factor).

Some may genuinely find it easier to sensibly justify costs but many with newer E53's have a massive head on toys due to sourced spec.

Sorry to butt in here but that price for steering wheel intgration of bluetooth is far cheaper than I was expecting


Does tha parrot use the sneezing man etc ?

The MKi9200 appears (and that means I just read from the list) appear to do what I want. The extra screen although nice is secondary to using the steering wheel for calls but if it's usefull and can be integrated neatly the that's fine


In all the above I don't want anything attached to the steering wheel as an add on....I want the steering wheel to work....inc sneezig man etc

does BLU TOOTH
does cabled music
is not massively more expensive
does NOT it seems integrate with the steering wheel ( i blieve there is an expensive option with complicated wiring and dip switches but not confimed)
has a seperate wheel to select options which could be attached near handbrake on centre console (not sure how without messing car up (I don't want anything attached to the steering wheel as an add on as I know it will get broke)
shows who's calling and does NOT seem to rely on voice announcements but the screen may have to be stealth located

maybe the soud cables could be put in the ash tray or poke nicely to amobile mount if I got an I phone or similar

what would you do.....trade a little display and no steering wheel input for the smallish premium

hell I might even get an Iphone one day....the options then might be better rather than a 3000 using say aaux input (at cost)

PS I have no CD changer or nave head unit so this seems a great way to play USB etc
