X6 40d 2011.  22k miles since new and around 29mpg average overall.  As with Don it varies from 24 to 35.

I had a 2005 E53 30d Sport.  55k miles from new and around 24mpg average overall.  Range from 24 to 32 (once).

August 2007 (reg April 2008) E70 X5 3.0d 7 seater.  Current mileage 110,400.  Serviced annually in November- reset the journey computer then for the year.  Average mileage for 2013-14 was 29.1, 6000 miles non towing on Vredestein wintrac extreme non-runflat and 10,000 on Conti runflats which included about 1000 miles towing heavy caravan.  Set the journey computer again at last service mid November, so far average is 31mpg on winter non runflats, but no towing.

2006 E53, average around 28 and mostly dual carriageway miles, though my right foot seems to be heavier than my left for some reason, can get over 35 if driving slowly at a steady speed.
Problem with the X5 is the weight, MPG can be ok once you're up and moving and at a steady speed, it's getting all of that weight up to speed which uses a lot of fuel. I had the same engine in my 5 series and had no problem getting 35 to the gallon, 45 if driven carefully.

Sounds like mine may have a problem then!

Mines an 07 7 seater, the missus uses it 4 days a week to go to the shops and spend my money, I use it twice a week to go out in and drive it like an old man. There's no enthusiastic driving.
It does around 20mpg around town when I drive, 18 when she drives and 24 on a motorway run.

Since buying it I've fitted an egr stat as it was stuck open and the car runs at 88-90* all the time, I've had a new glow plug controller and a new stutter valve (throttle plate) fitted.

There's no faults in the memory and it's well looked after.

Any ideas?
I will get it on a scanner again to check but I assumed this was normal.

Very short journeys will eat fuel.  It's just over a mile to my nearest post office - 13mpg from cold there and back.  Makes posting a letter expensive!  Low 20s going to the town about 4 miles away because by then it warms up.  It's only the combination of short and many more longish runs - over 10 miles that helps me get better consumption.  Next time you're in a BMW dealer's ask for a print out of journeys from the record on the key - you'll be amazed at how many short ones there are!

As above, short journeys kill fuel and batteries and on newer models with a DPF fitted that too!

3.0sd 2008 7 seater M sport.
Currently showing 22.7mpg average since being reset about 6 weeks ago. Includes a lot of town driving and cold starts. Does about 27 on the motorway at normal Uk speeds (85-90).
Drove it to the Italian Lakes last year and the average was about 27-28mpg. Including a blat to 130Mph on the autobahn. Driving at 70-75 on motorway can coax it over 30. But I didn't buy it for economy.

Good to know. So this is normal and nothing like the official figures.
My Z4M interestingly is about the same yet the official combined figures are polls apart. I think after 2006 the numbers became unrealistic

it really does depend on how many long and how many short journeys you do, as well as driving style.

A pal of mine, no longer with us, got 34mpg over a year out of his 3.0d by only using the gearbox manually!  He drove gently and also used it mainly to commute between Durham and Manchester which was a big help!
