Help Smoke driving me mad
Re: Help Smoke driving me mad
Kamb could you elaborate a little on the problem you found? It might be the same as mine if I haven't connected something properly!?

Still trying to find problem mate
Re: Help Smoke driving me mad
Ok car been running with egr connected for a week and following symptoms
- smoke on start up
- cloud of smoke on hard acceleration
Today I blocked the egr vacuum hose again and the following was seen
- smoke on start up (not as much)
- no cloud of smoke on hard acceleration
Would that mean possibly egr faulty and will blocking the vacuum hose cause any issues
Last note since buying the car it has had following error code but no error lights on dash would I be right in thinking code states valve already disabled or could it be left in open position
Also car has a little more power since vacuum hose blocked
Error code
4501 - exhaust valve recirculating control deactivation
- smoke on start up
- cloud of smoke on hard acceleration

Re: Help Smoke driving me mad
Hi Guys
apologise for starting up this old thread again
smoke is still driving me mad I know most people say its normal however its getting a bit embarrassing
as when i start car if let stationary for a few hours
it lets off a big cloud of smoke on start up
so far following has been done
- EGR vac hose disconnected (helped smoke as non on accelaration now)
- PCV changed to Vortex
- New oil changed
I have been to numerous garages and they all say its normal
however I went to a garage today he suspected it was faulty injectors and costly repair
fortunately he had software to check each cyclinder injector
and confirm all within threashold something about mg/stoke was wition -5 to +4
he then said EGR valve removed the air intake however as unable to remove the bottom 2 screws he turn put his finger into valve
said felt clean and there was a little oil but more like condensation
he said easiest was to fully check would be to remove the air intake unit totally one with something like 20 nuts and then check EGV valve also if it is dirty will make it easier to remove and clean
told him i can do that so thats hopefully my next job in a few days
however does anyone else have any idea what else it could be if after cleaning EGR valve still causing issues
he did state there was an error code EGR circulation pressure too high

Re: Help Smoke driving me mad
Mine is exactly the same and it is a Diesel engine so going to do this. If I take the car on a spirited drive the smok goes for a bit but a week later if not driven hard then it does same thing, I am used to it now and had several things checked out. I do however know that one of my glow plugs needs changing but it starts first time so not wasting money on one!
Re: Help Smoke driving me mad
Replacing a faulty injector made a big difference to these symptoms on mine.

But that doesn't check for a leaky injector.
You need to get them rig tested to check them properly.
Inpa told me mine were OK.
But when tested at local Bosch service centre 1 leaked immediately at less that 4psi, and another leaked during pressure hold test.
To have all 6 tested and 2 refurbished cost just off £450.
But what a difference afterwards.

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Re: Help Smoke driving me mad
Wonder if its worth checking out the crank case vent seperator on top at back of engine...
If its a pre 2005 vehicle... it may do with a Vortex oil seperator ?

Yup.
but had other issues also.
Would fail to start when warm - to the extent of having to carry a further battery fully charged to get me going...
Also Stank of diesel when it did start and run.
Consumption was down to approx 23-24mpg average before then up to 27-28mpg after..
And the performance came back.
Should mention that the place i used charged approx £30 to test injectors, then from report they discussed what i wanted to do.
It only gets expensive when you need to do further work, but well worth it.

Re: Help Smoke driving me mad
confirm: i used to have e53, with injector issues causing hot start problems, poor economy etc. I used PF Jones diesel specialists for refurbed injectors.
