Interesting gadget - I may invest.
I do an Alps skiing trip a couple of times a year and the amount of salt (or other road treatment residue) from 4 different European countries stuck to the bottom/side of the car is incredible. Two years ago I followed a snow plough on the French autoroute in a snowstorm. When I got home there was a dirty white crust behind the front grill which took some shifting. I suspect this stuff is pretty nasty if left on.
I think many local authorities (here and Europe) are putting down huge quantities of stuff to avoid the constant charge of not gritting (and potential liability for accidents).
I always spend a good hour simply hosing the car down on my return.
