Dash cam installation ….

Post by pvr » Sun Feb 08, 2015 6:35 pm

This time in the Audi, that must be the simplest installation possible with the fusebox at the bottom of the a-pillar at the side of the dashboard. No wires needed cutting, just added a new circuit with one of these that I had still laying about.

To push the cable away, this set comes in very handy.

The camera is the Mini 0805. I have just put in a 32 Gb micro SD, and have not done anything else. Must read the manual to see if I need to set anything up but ran out of time. If anyone has any pointers on what needs setting, that would be great.

The Audi must be the easiest car to install something like this though, plug and play.

Never fitted a Dashcam as I have never seen the need, however with "crash for cash" on the rise, it might be something to consider in the coming years.

I work in Russia / Kazakhstan, and most of them have them installed. Probably because they are terrible drivers!

I wrongly thought that insurance companies were working in your best interests and that by having the legal insurance cover, that they would fight your corner in case of a non fault accident.

That understanding was dented when having to deal with my mother in laws damage to the car incurred in a car park (she was not in the car), where a driver drove into the car in front of witnesses and then drove off.

Witnesses left notes, insurance / Police involved, but 6 months later no progress except for my mother in law being out of pocket for the excess as basically, if the other insurance company is not playing ball, there is nothing you can do. You can not hurry them along, and your legal insurance is worthless.

In addition to that, reading / learning that the insurance business is really a business where they will take the path of least cost to them. That includes going 50:50 even though you are not at fault at all, but it is cheaper for them to settle.

Based on those events I thought it would be safer for me to at least have a fighting chance to get some justice.

Does feel funny on the very first trip with the camera working that it films a police car going through a red light at the railway station just poodling along  and I have to stop crossing the road as that car is right in my way :))

Send the clip to the Chief Constable.  Speedwatch have been asked to log any infractions by emergency vehicles that we observe.  A couple of Police vehicles have been see above the limit and the details passed on.

Insurance is as you say, all about maximising profit whilst minimising payouts to customers in any possible way. Hence telling your insurers about any changes you make in case they use it as a way of wheedling out of paying because if they can then they will!  Same with insurance backed extended warranties.  It's the small print that catches customers out!
