Selling Advice

Post by entropy » Fri Feb 06, 2015 6:50 pm

Hi Guys,

I've gone back into a company car and the X5 is now needing a nice new loving home!

its a 2001 4.4 v8 and mechanically has been very well looked after and no expense has been spared.

It does however need the below repairs with my estimated costs.

1. New Drivers side Mirror £250 from Scrap dealer ( courtesy of hit and run white van man)
2. Rear bumper needs respraying £120 ( according to my wife this courtesy of a bollard, an old woman and the sun in her eyes)

Do I get these repaired or just sell as is? Do I risk getting knocked down heavily by a buyer for this repairs i.e more than repairs would actually cost.

The car has 104k miles and i've really looked after it mechanically so i'm reluctant to spend more money on what it is cosmetic damage.

Thoughts?

It's a difficult one depending on the value of the car.  I would say that if you want top dollar then repairs are a must.  If however you are looking for a lowish price then don't bother but make sure you are upfront with buyers so as to stop them using the damage as a bargaining tool.

True! Id hate to fix for someone and then get lowballed

and now the million dollar question! how much is it worth lol

pricing is all over the place. I find on auto trader they range from £3,500 - £5,500.

Spec has a lot to down the price.  Leather, nav, BLUETOOTH, sunroof are the things people. Look for.  I'm assuming the 4.4. Was auto as standard. If you car is well specced and has a good service history I would consider doing the repairs and asking higher end of the prices unless you just want a quick hassle free sale then leave the car and ask lower end..

I've been tentatively looking for an E53 and I am finding that the 4.4's are at the lower end of the price range. Out of interest, what colour, spec etc is yours?

personally i think £120 to re spray the bumper is hopeful on your part, also i would say lower end of the range.

its good to to a deal with a forum member, if your selling a genuinely good x5, it save you dealing with all the tyre kickers and the buyer looking at all the scrap ones,

go deal ;)

Im in the same boat. We've decided to sell our X and it needs the odd bit of cosmetics a d my mirror motor has gone. Problem you have is the general punter will reduce the price no matter what. Even if in mint condition!!!!! Ive decided that when i sell mine i'm gonna get a quote done to rectify the paint and offer that amount as a discount. Cant be fairer than that.

As for prices they are all over the place. I went to see a couple yeaterday to see what price to pitch mine at. Boy, both X5's had partial history, interior was wrecked and not as specced as mine but were asking for top dollor and offering a 3 month warranty. One dealer told me that the car was mint, when i looked it had been keyed down the side and filled in with a touch up pen.

Just be realistic with the pricing i guess.

Think i'll get it a good valet and then hopefully do a deal with Pete :-)

BigSanj - think the other problem I have is I've become to attached! Can't be bothered with the tyre kickers!

Yes! I bet that was me!!! I sold my car when I gave up teaching - I never wanted to sell it and have regretted it ever since.
