Thanks for the quality replies. I read in the halfords oil guide that earlier m54 engines should use 10w40 anyway, so I'm thinking when I next top up, I might mix some in.

Any danger specific to blending two grades?

I have mixed mobil full synthetic 5w30 (75%) with 0w40 (25%) for the last 2 years, not an issue yet

That's encouraging, thanks.

I'll maybe try topping up with 10w40 in future and then make an executive decision at oil service time which to stick with.

Thanks for all the helpful posts, x drivers.

I run an E53 (115,000 miles) on Mobil 1, Extended Life 10-60 oil.  Before this, when the car was getting oil services through BMW, I got a top-end rattle on start-up if the car had been stood a few days - now there is no such noise.  Looking inside the filler hole (into rocker covers) the chain and cam are spotless.  I also run a 97,000 miles E31 on the same oil - there is no oil use between services on either of these cars.
