Happy New Year everyone!!
I just have to get something straight in my head before car goes into dealer next week so i'm sure you guys can sort me out.....
I have a 2006 diesel sport so have the Webasto under the bonnet but have no aux heating on the OBC & no remote control on the key fob.
Can the dealer enable the aux heating via their 'computer' (ie car plugged in at dealer)? If i understand this correctly that would give me aux heating but only via the timer on OBC?
When i bought the car dealer said it had aux heating. Car goes back in to get a few issues sorted next week (this is the 3rd time it was supposed to go in - every other time i cancelled because it was snowing & i wasn't gonna try driving around Edinburgh in their courtesy 1 series!!!).
Thanks in advance as usual.
Cheers,
Martyn.

Webasto again! ...sorry!
Re: Webasto again! ...sorry!
Yes, you need to have the Aux/park heating "coded". It will then appear in your MID or Nav display.
They do this by enabling the function via a GT1 diagnostic machine.
You will be able to set 2 x "On" timers via the display.
In order to use the remote function, you need a transmitter and receiver that will turn the aux/park heating on via the remote fob.
V expensive to have a dealer do it.
Plenty of kits and instructions available online.

Re: Webasto again! ...sorry!
I too am really confused about using the Webasto as a remote heater . Connecting 12 volts to pin 1 causes it to start up and then shut down a few seconds later.
I know it works as a cold start in the recent weather fired it up and I could hear it running.
Apparently the X5 is fitted with either the Webasto ThermoTop C or ThermoTop Z - The C has a built in water pump and the Z has no water pump. Webasto advertise a conversion kit which includes the pump and a timer to enable auxiliary heating.
Mine has a Thermo Top Z
If I have aux heating enabled in the OBC will it work or do I need the additional water pump ?

Re: Webasto again! ...sorry!
The ThermoTop C has a circulating pump located on the webasto unit itself, where as the ThermoTop Z has one further down the line. Have a look just below the right hand side light cluster in the engine bay. You'll see it mounted up front.
I'm guessing that the problem with a lot of these units is that they are never really used if not coded to as aux/park heating.
In my case, the circulating fan in my X5 was dead. This caused the webasto to fire up but shut down owing to the lack of circulation.
I replaced the pump and now find that the combustion fan in my ThermoTop Z is faulty and also needs to be replaced.
In answer to your question, you need the vehicle aux/park heating coded first. Then you will find out if there are any other issues with the unit itself.
I'd advise getting the vehicle coded but at the same time, ask them to test the aux/park heating function and then run and read a diagnostic report.
It should show up any faults with the unit itself.
I think what you are hearing is the circulating pump, not the webasto unit itself. If it was firing up, you would see activity from the small exhaust mounted under the vehicle passenger side.
The webasto sounds like a small furnace. The circulating pump sounds like a high pitched motor running.
Hope this is of some help.

Re: Webasto again! ...sorry!
Thanks mccabema, that was exactly what i needed to know - and i've got the right phrases to hit my dealer with! Hopefully it will just be a matter of them enabling the OBC & there will be no other issues. Mmmh, nice warm cabin in the mornings, can't wait!
Thanks again,
Martyn.

Re: Webasto again! ...sorry!
Thanks from me too mccabema .
I had tried previously putting 12 v on to pin 1 of the unit and it sounded as if a fan in the unit started up and then shut down after a few seconds . I assumed (wrongly ) that as there was no water pump that this was the reason. I also read somewhere that the unit took about 30 secs to fire up . I think the unit goes through a purge sequence before firing up - logical I suppose to eliminate any lingering diesel fumes, I think that's what I was hearing .
I have just tried keeping the 12v on for longer and it actually starts up and runs successfully .
I shall now wire in a wireless remote unit as in monkeyfingers excellent write up
