New X4 at last

Post by touring » Wed Jan 21, 2015 3:17 pm

Comparison between the X5 and X4, I have only had it a few days so these are my inital thoughts, the X4 feels sharper and quicker to react to steering inputs. The driving position is lower than the X5 but sufficiently high enough. I miss the electric column and the fact that the X4 does not have a rear wiper, is odd. The X5 40d was quick, the 30d X4 is just as quick, probably because it is .6 of a ton lighter. The voice control on the X4 appears better than the X5 and the scratchpad on the Idrive is interesting. The electric tailgate is good and the rear load system rails and mounts are of good quality and well designed.
The heated seats take longer to warm up than the X5, this maybe because they are standard and not a £300 option. It feels more like a car than a 4x4, however from the driver’s seat you would be hard pressed to know which BMW you are in. There is poor rear visibility (but who looks back)

Contrary to all the press reports, the rear load space is good and certainly sufficient for my needs. The comment ‘why pay more for less’ just shows they don’t get it. I would not buy an X3 because I would look at it in the drive and think ’I wish I had brought an X5’ the X4 is different.

Yes at £50k+ it is not cheap, other vehicles in this sector do not ‘float my boat’ and so it was the X4, you could wait two years and buy a Porsche Macan but I may be dead by then!

I picked the X4 up, drove about 15 miles and stopped for lunch (about one hour) came back to the car and it had forgot the ratio station I had set, the temperature was on maximum and the seat was not set – clearly it had forgotten the settings.
I proceeded back to home, about a further 7 miles with no dramas, and no repeat of its ‘senior moment’

It does not have that dominating ‘presence’ of an X5, however that may be a good thing in some people’s eyes. I look at it and think it is quite small – then parked next to a Q3, Qashqai or Sportarge it is considerably bigger. I have to say that this is a fairly anonymous car as people have not commented on it parked. It is still very new so it is unfair to comment on the economy, however it appears no better than the 40d.  Pound for pound I think the X5 is the better car but the world’s attitude to big cars – especially a BMW X5 is ‘only contempt’ maybe the X4 just slips under the radar and gives the owner a reduced hassle purchase. O:-)

Shocking behaviour, and such lovely weather as well.

Not sure now who had that senior moment, touring or the car …  O:-)

Sorry, I have spent 55 min trying to post a couple of pics, I followed Sanj guide but to no avail.
He says copy and the last link, it will not allow me to do this. Is it because I am using an IPad.

As a last effort to appease those that demand pics,I may just sketch it or cut it in Stone - it may be quicker!  :'(

You have to link the IMG type code then it works.  Have you got a separate photo store?  Mine are all in Photobucket.  I'm using an iPad.  I need to use the Photobucket App to copy the link from.

OK, eventually got some pictures up, not very good but I will post better ones soon.
I have to say the X4 is now starting to feel a lot quicker - very sharp.ImageImageImage

No they are standard 19", and no it's a Q3, apart from that you are spot on. :)
