Service issue advice please
About a week ago my X5 went in to the main dealer for a value brake fluid change and MOT.
Their organisation and service is appalling but that's s different matter.
Basically the two year brake fluid clock indicator was showing so I had it done.
When I collected the car I noticed certain OBC settings were now in km so I just looked up how to change it in the book and did so.
However I have just realised they have reset the service indicator so it shows 5 green lights. It was around 2 years since the last service but the mileage has been very low. I think there were 3 lights remaining. What should I ask for when contacting them?
I don't want to wait until 5 lights go before service but have no way of knowing when it should be done. It seems they've screwed it up and I could either be at loss by having it serviced before it is required or unwittingly not follow the proper schedule if I wait until all lights go out which as well as not being good for the car, could affect my BMW warranty. That's as well as the hassle (on top of issues I already had with them getting the service/MOT organised in the first place and when it came to paying them having conveniently forgotten it was on a value price basis - they suggested I mention it when booking next time when I'd told them 3 times i.e. when I first booked, when I called them and found they'd not actually booked it in and when I dropped it off at which time I got the impression it still hadn't actually been booked in as it wasn't on the list....)

If it help, my lights go out roughly every 5k miles, however I do long steady gentle motorway driving. most folk, doing less motorway driving , say their lights go out every 3000 miles. so on that basis, if you did have 3 lights remaining, then you'll have about 9000 miles to go, at which point you could have it serviced then all five lights reset.

I just read the manual and it says if you cover a low mileage you should still have the oil changed every two years so that is due. I am surprised the indicator doesn't also take time into account. However I think the next service due is an inspection II. So does this mean I should just get the oil changed or get on with the inspection II now? It's got a full BMW service history and it's on the BMW insured warrany scheme so I want it to be spot on.

Moral of this story: Don't go to the dealer for service work unless:
- you have to
- your car is <=6 years old
- it is a warranty claim

If the dealer was any good they will have changed the oil under the time rather than condition based servicing at two years, and then reset the service lights.
FYI there is no Inspection 2 on the diesels.

It's under a BMW AUC warranty so has no choice...

Be sure to leverage that warranty and get EVERYTHING done before the 12 months is up. Remember, nothing is out of the question! After that, go Indy.

Thanks for the reminder about the Inspection II though I think they may change the air filter and possibly the other filter I forget the name of (the one that was changed to the more modern version after I bought it).
I was about even on the warranty for the first three years possibly slightly up but last year had no claims. I deliberated before renewing but as at the moment it's our only car and there can be some pretty bad issues with gearboxes etc (I know you can get them repaired reasonably but it's a lot of hassle) I thought I'd stick with it.

again personal preference [and incl, the time/cost factor in as well]... these days i only do 3k miles a year and that includes 2k round trip to Europe. However, I tend to service my cars regularly once a year - oil+filter+pollen etc [with fuel filter being done every other year]. to keep everything in synch and avoid potential delays I couple that with MOT which helps with planning [and money
aspect too].

I spoke to the service manager today and am taking it in on Monday. He suggested we look at the information recorded by the key first but if it is reasonably close to needing filters etc it will probably have an Inspection service plus any filters required. I made sure I mentioned the value service deal and also the loyalty discount in respect of parts. He said he will make sure I get an X5 as a courtesy car due to the hassle I've had recently.

I had an Inspection 1 done. The service was good this time. It was nice to drive a virtually new X5 2.5 M. Nearly £50,000 though!
Apparently the filters (fuel, air, breather if old style which mine isn't) are changed every 3 services so not due until next time.
