Baris @ Carphonics has worked his miracle!

Post by ScottBarton » Thu Jan 15, 2015 11:59 pm

Feel I must leave some great feedback for Baris at Carphonics. My BM54 unit needed some repairs after all but one channel failed and I was left with front passenger side speakers only. Most frustrating!
A couple of emails and a phone call later I removed the unit and sent away on Monday. Today it was back at my house, fully repaired with Stage 2 upgrade and complete with iPod connectivity (using his latest innovation which allows the iPod to be controlled via the steering wheel buttons).

Fitted it all back in tonight and everything working like a dream. Well done that man! Clear, crisp sound, more deeper bass notes, with Aux enabled and iPod connectivity.
Next on the list...Digital TV module.

Never used him but heard he is good, you can't beat a bit of good workmanship for a decent £££ I think that's all any of us ask for.

Spoke to soon...a few gremlins. But have spoken to Baris and we think we have the answer. The new iPod cable added to the system may be playing havoc with the ibus system, so I need to send off my TV tuner to have that integrated.

At present with it all connected, I have no headlights, indicators work but not tick tocking on the dash, the nav screen freezes and resets....Tried disconnecting battery for a period but made no difference.
As soon as i disconnect the multi plug everything comes back and works as normal...albeit with no stereo.  ::)

Will report back....

Interested to know how you get on.

I've bought a 2nd hand BM54 to send away to him.

Must say in all the write-ups in M3Cutters never heard of any probs.

What year is your X5? Does the iPod connect to the BM54 in the boot and you have a long cable to the front
or is it connected behind the head-unit?

Cheers

Mine is a 2004 X5. There is a new cable coming out of the BM54 unit with a 32 pin iPod plug. Then there is a 5mtr long cable that plugs into that where you can route to wherever you want it. At present I just have the iPod sitting on top of my Nav drive in the left hand boot cubby hole. I will eventually run it in....but it was cold the other night.  ::)
Plus....as there is control on the steering wheel and screen, there is no urgency.
The TV module and BM54 is back with Baris now, so hopefully all will be working come the weekend.

Ah, you can see what's playing and control on the screen now? Even if iPod is in the boot?
That's definitely worth doing. Does it also charge the iPod or do you need to do something else for that?

Actually...to be honest I dont know yet  ::)
When I connected it last week, you can control the track via the up and down button on the steering wheel, but as the screen was blank and had several gremlins to deal with I could not see the fully function of it...
When I get the TV stage 2 upgrade and the BM54 back, linked together, I will post up findings and review.

Got the kit back from Baris on Saturday but unfortunately we had to revert to the original spec iPod cable. No big deal, just means I had to run the cable from the boot to the front and control the music via the iPod. I guess his lasted innovation had a few teething problems.
However, I am happy to report the digital TV upgrade is perfect, all speakers working, a vast improvement from what had originally! I went for the Stage 2 amp upgrade, with iPod connectivity and the stage 2 digital TV upgrade.

Was surprised on how easy it was to run cables from the boot well up to the front. Did a bit of research online and found a very handy youtube video showing the best route to run it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiyhsJxkAsI
I also invested in a set of trim removal tools which proved to be a great buy and very handy!

So the iPod cable is tucked up under the passenger seat and pokes up to the side of the seat. Left enough slack so that i can get a small mount on the dash, or I can just leave it in the centre console.
The infrared eye for the TV remote control follows the same route, past the seat, into the passenger footwell and the eye mounted just underneath on the left of the footwell. Wanted to get it a bit further up to be honest but the cable was just that little bit too short.

I also discovered a great way of getting to the 'hard to get to' bolts....use a 5 year old!

All in all very satisfied with the end result. I am happy I can have my entire music library in the car and can play my Metallica albums at full volume....and the kids are happy they have CBBC and CBeebies when we go out!

My 2 year old enjoying the in car entertainment.

Next on the list...rear screens.  :)

Of course if you get up late one morning your 5 year old will have disassembled the car in protest.... he's probably better than a BMW Tech now...... :))

Is your iPod the older model? I have an iPod Touch 5 with Lightening connector, can he fit those to or just the
older type cable? Have you got standard speakers still?

Mine is an iPod classic, 160GB, with the 30 pin connector. I have ordered an Apple adapter so that if I wanted to I can plug my iPhone 5s in as well. The cable supplied by Baris is the traditional 30 pin lead.
Still got standard speakers, and to be honest they sound OK. Maybe in the future its another upgrade I will go for.

For a 5 year old I was quite surprised at how well he handled a socket set...he has watched me fettle with cars most of his life though and spent most of last summer passing tools to me whilst I was under the MR2 fixing various things!  ::)

Here he is last year after helping me wash both cars. He is yet to help me clean the X5..must be like a mountain to him compared to the MR2 and 205!
