Theres at any one time thousands of cars for sale on autotrader, I know you hear about the small percentage of scam artists on the internet, but if you believe everything on the internet you would never go out of the house.

Absolutely, I've bought and sold quite a few cars at well over a couple of grand and never had an issue.  It's all about doing your research.

so put another way, you part with 35k and its a scam or owed finance on and your shafted, ive sold cars private but then your worried about whos going to turn up, is the money real, if a transfer can they reverse it etc etc, it completely up to the op but i wouldnt be parting with that money private, you also have no warrenty at all unless theres some left on it

That's what I'm saying, you need to do your research and don't leave anything to chance.  Especially the payment side of it when selling.

dgm's advice is great, my last "big" purchase if you will, was my BMW 3 series. There was a 3 month warranty on it from the seller (private) and I never had any problems with this car apart from injectors which were a hereditary problem of the 320i engine. So my private purchase was ok. Funny thing was, I managed to get 800 quid off the price by haggling (well I didn't , a friend did :)

I think the real difference between private vs dealer (bmw) when buying such an expensive car is the warranty. I think you will have peace of mind if anything wrong comes to happen (well we hope!). I think for purchases where the price of the car is not that great private will probably be a bit cheaper. Also when it comes to warranties, would you get the same level of cover from the likes of RAC, AA?

I have looked at a few X5s being sold by private sellers with the specs I want and the prices being asked are not really cheaper than the ones priced by dealers, but then Im not sure what the markup private sellers usually place on their cars or how much haggling you can do with a private seller (talking about X5s here).

BMW don't finance for less than 10%???

Am I missing something? We are currently in the days of the cheapest credit that has ever been available (albeit meeting certain criteria's)

Used cars seem to attract poor rates regardless of dealer.  We were looking for a used car last weekend and the APR was 14.6% whereas for a brand new car it is £1,500 off and an APR of 2.9%.  Looking at the whole package it is cheaper to buy new than used.

It just does not make sense to me.  I think my wife was paying over 15% on her Mini and that was for new on PCP.

Given the current state of the economy and interest base rates, it's hard to see how these finance houses can really justify the high rates unless the risks they see market wide are too high to take a chance on even those with a realky high credit rating.

Yea, I tell you, if you take this into account, it is attractive to buy new instead. Thing with buying new is that the depreciation rate for the first 3 years really makes you lose a lot of money.

I did think about a lease instead of my ongoing search for a used x5, however lease just doesn't feel right to me; you are basically renting a car for a long term, the thing will never be yours

I don't lease/finance my cars (other than my new runaround car which lists @£30k and with all the discounts has worked out at £145/mth

If you think about leases/PCPs you effectively covering the depreciation on a monthly basis plus interest as opposed to say a cash buyer who takes the hit in one go at the end
