BMW rear suspension change from air to coil

Post by diatonicbreaks » Fri Jan 16, 2015 8:22 am

Hi all,

I recently tried to swap my air bags over to coils on the rear of my e53 2001. I got everything fine until I needed to put the springs in. They just wouldn't fit in the gap. I tried every angle and even compresse the springs more than was advised. I have since decided to give the car to a mechanic but he seems to think a whole host of things need to come out in order to get them in, is that correct ? Many thanks for any advice.

Well I got them in by myself by using a bottle jack and wood to  expand the space needed to slide the springs in.
The above method works for me and not having a go at your mechanic he must try harder!

TBH I removed quite a bit but only because I done the integral links and rose joint bushes and all rear arms at same time, you can get them in if the whole of the rear is off the floor and yes use a lever bar or some wood to lever the arm down and compress the spring then release it when its in the right spot. its tight but not impossible

Ah OK I didn't realise I needed to pry it open so much as the guides I read didn't mention it. I'm far from being mechanically minded !! Thanks for the replays guys really helps. I'll try again before I send it back to the mechanic on Monday.

Space is tight but if you ratchet the springs down to 25 cm or less they will squeeze in - http://www.xdrivers.co.uk/forum/https:/ ... ic.php?t=8
