Sytner BMW - Advice on price asked for these 2 X5s

Let me get this right, you 'offered' £30,000 plus on something you hadn't seen and went along with the finance and sales guy on this. I would have hit the roof if the car wasn't there let alone hang around and play silly buggers.

Take my advice, from recent experience 90% of BMW Approved used cars are dogs, no better than those from a back street dealer. I travelled miles over several months to dealers to view 'pristine' examples only to find bodged up, poorly looked after and poorly repaired examples.
Yes, I did end up buying from a BMW dealer and it's a cracking example but I saw loads of rubbish before and had to travel 4 hrs to view it, having said that I only negotiated and put down a deposit AFTER I had seen it in the flesh and was happy with it's condition, otherwise it's a waste of time.

my plan initially was to buy a car from an independent dealer, however having heard horror stories about warranty and shady origin of a vehicle I gave up on going that route. At the same time, we hear stories like yours that makes you think if you should or should not go through a BMW dealer. At least I have learned a lesson! Buying a car should not come down to luck to be honest.

OP; I too went down this route of trying to negotiate a price on the car. I was looking for a specific specification (Comfort seats, 7 seats, rear camera, pan roof, electric tailgate, 2010 or later, 40k miles or less). I was watching the AUC page daily and would call the dealer on any that came up. Each dealer had overpriced the car by such an amount, or so I thought. I would see a great priced one there and it would be sold immediately. Usually 5k less than the ones that took a few days to sell. So each time i called up and negotiated with the ones that were higher priced. Each one would not budge more than a few hundred pounds.

Eventually I saw a 2012 model, with 17k miles, all the extras and many more that i hadnt wanted and called up without seeing and put down a deposit. It was one of the cheaper ones that had come up, around 4k cheaper than the rest of the offerings and with more extras than I needed by a long way.

In the end, the car was ok, a few minor scratches and a few minor issues. None of which I noticed when I bought it as I had just got off a long haul flight and just wanted to go home.

OP; How long do you want to spend messing around with salesmen befor you bite the bullet and buy one. That was what forced the conclusion in the end for me. As you can see from my other posts, it is a typical AUC car, tarted up a little with wheel damage etc fixed with a cheap bodges. I have had issues after purchase, some of which BMW didnt care about and some of which have been fixed.

Next time, its either brand new for me or private sale.

Really appreciate your reply with the experience you have had. What time of the year did you buy? I would think that since it is January (almost end of the month) I would have had a greater chance to negotiate a good discount. Well, I will wait if perhaps they give me a call again, but you made me think twice now about going the private route. I have the cash to buy new too however Im not sure if it is worth at all as depreciation on the X5 really bites the first 3 years. Also this car would not see a lot of mileage as I work from home and it would be occasionally driven to London maybe 3 times a month so I do not think it is worth for me to buy new

I was looking from april to june time. Apparently there was a certain time of the year around the end of april that they would want to get numbers up for their sales figures so may start to accept lower prices. Well, this didnt work out at all for me.

I would put money on them not calling you back when you offered so much below the price. Perhaps its worth a call to see what they will negotiate down to?

I am a similar situation to you I drive very little and so dont need a brand new example. After I bought mine, I began thinking I had wasted a lot of money. If you look around for the half the price I paid and you are looking; you can find the same car with less than 80k miles and similar spec. If like me you dont drive a lot, it wouldnt hurt for the car to be in the garage once a year for repairs. I kept it in the end, but may still change in the future befor its lost too much in depreciation.

BMW like most main dealers 'don't do discounts' mainly due to saps walking in and paying the asking over recent years.
Having said that I managed to get about a grand off (£35K X5), four brand new tyres although they were reasonable to start with but they wouldn't budge any further when I asked for a £65 Iphone cradle to seal the deal 

I would consider myself an experienced haggler yet this time round with a BMW dealer I struggled TBH and that was a straight cash deal (means nowt these days BTW)

Having visited a Skoda Dealer this morning, the first thing they did was hand me the keys for a Superb and said take it off for a drive on your own.  So we moved the child seat over, hopped aboard and away we went for a good long run.

Discussed potentials for discount - as a CSMA Member I can in some cases get up to 25% off - and they said we'll match it.  Much rather give a local Dealer a chance than a national chain.

Very different approach to that of BMW, but maybe the new targets have been set by BMW GB for 2015 and the Dealershop wasn't co-operating?  Probably had this year's Summer Holiday to pay for! >:D

You ought to get some 'movement' on the price as they will have whacked at least £2k on the price they paid for it.  Last time I traded I got £12k and the dealer put it on the forecourt for £16.5k.  I was very less than impressed and made sure they knew it when we bought the Mini.

Well could be that they didn't want to cooperate. They were running a sales event, I really thought I was going to get something out of them! Im sure the car is way overpriced, I suppose they thought I was naive enough

I will play the wait game...if they don't call me, well it wasn't meant to be I guess.

And yea, just knowing that the car sitting in the garage most of the week is losing pounds every week makes you think twice about buying new  :'(

Initially I thought I was going to have an easy time with the salesman, guy was really nice. however as soon as the retail manager showed up, you could see it would be an uphill battle

Theres no way id be buying a car over a coupe of grand private, there s so many risks , scams, owed finance ttansferred to you etc etc
