3.0D Exhausts - Improvements
3.0D Exhausts - Improvements
I would much prefer my "zorsts" to exit out of the rear like the newer models, has anybody found a good way ?
Have seen the cat back systems on fleabay but heard lack of back pressure as no silencers made low rev driving worse, true ?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Re: 3.0D Exhausts - Improvements
Do you want the zorsts to actually come out the back or just for looks ?
The reason i ask is that some forum menbers have created the 'tin can' false zorst look by tac welding some 4.8i parts on the rear of the oem zorst........sounds terrible but actually looks really good.

Re: 3.0D Exhausts - Improvements
It really depends on if you want just looks or looks/performance too.
I'd go with a decent catback system , as combined with a decent remap will help with the looks and performance.

Cat back best option but i spoke to the Senior Tech at my local official stealer yesterday and he said dont, it will screw where it makes power which confirmed what i was told about back pressure etc.
He said it would sound great but lose all its bottom end umph, causing you to throttle harder to compensate, screwing the mpg.
He strongly reccomended to leave as is, so i am.

Re: 3.0D Exhausts - Improvements
I have my exhausts going out through the back - job was done prior to me buying the car and as such have no details on the technicalities - and can find no paperwork referring to within the cars papers.
Not the greatest pic - taken a while ago but i really like the look - and sound.
My system has two rear exhaust boxes, not sure about cats but the system certainly sounds ok - i would say better than the standard and i would not appear to have any adverse issues re the power or the mpg.

Re: 3.0D Exhausts - Improvements
Hi Paul,
thanks for the great picture and info.
If you leave the silencers on then no problems will occur which is the way i wish to go, and to look like yours.
I think i have found somne slip ons which well.........slip on once you take the final curved bit off the ends, if this is so i will buy/fit/post pics for all to see.
Thanks again,
Paul

Hmmm, I have tuned both my previous 330d and 530d. My 330d had upgraded intercooler, Milltek Catback and AmD remap as well as suspension/brakes/etc, etc. It was magazine featured and went round The Ring no problems. It went like stink and the writer for PBMW who wrote the feature couldn't believe the pull from a standing start. I even did a couple of runs against my mates E46 M3 vert and it would keep up with him all the way to 130ish. My 530d had a Supersprint back box and was remapped by Jason. Jason will confirm how well it went even low down and again was ragged round The Ring.
The thing is the standard systems on most vehicles are very restrictive, for both noise and emissions purposes. Replacements such as Supersprint, Milltek, etc simply reduce but not remove the back pressure. This helps the engine breathe a little better and helps with performance. Also in the case of vehicles such as the 3.0d it will actually help the turbo spool up faster/earlier.

Supersprint is an option or maybe a custom from someone like Torqueflow in Brum or Profusion in Slough http://www.profusioncustoms.com/ (they will be doing mine). It's not the cheapest option as you can just add a set of tips for the look, but it is the better option....

Yes that sounds good, until you get to the remap bit, already done and dont want another. For a straight add on i know your right about increasing breathing as this is done heavily on my Ducati's but the Senior Tech knows his stuff i would have thought.
The car has to go better with straight through's for sure, but back pressure is a problem. My previous car was an E46 Rag Top with SMG, i changed the huge back box for just this reason, a 15kg saving for a start and it was pants, made a boy racer noise but the worst thing i was having to drop extra gears going up hills as loads of torque was lost, to higher rev ranges, so i changed it back.
Reason for this post was simply i dont want to go that expensive route again.

Re: 3.0D Exhausts - Improvements
i fitted a remus cat back system with two twin exits, it sounds good i was following it home the other day and when the wife put her foot down it sounded even better. i felt to be fair that the engine seem to rev a bit more quicker, and standard mode the car behaved a little more like sport mode. i will prob get another remap when i get it serviced and get injector sorted. it does have a old superchip remap from the previous owner.

Great cheers for this. Tell me i know mid range and high end its faster but whats the bottom end like around town and the like ?

I fitted a blueflame cat back to my other x and never had any probs with it ....other than constantly cleaning the soot of it ..the main reason i haven't re done it yet on the latest x though i still am tempted to do something with it when the finances permit
Out of interest why no re map....have you had a bad experience with one?

Wow that looks ace.
Sorry to be unclear have just had a remap (check the power or whatever its called section) so what i meant was i dont want another to cope with the exhaust change. Was yours normal to drive at low revs when compared to the stock exhausts ?

ahhhh! just read your remap thread all makes sense now yep mine felt normal to drive a low revs hardly any difference really being a smoker other than slightly deeper tone and looks of course
