Power steering noise/leak

Post by AndyP75 » Fri Jan 09, 2015 10:26 am

Hi all
Not sure if this is a common fault, but when I turn the wheel clockwise I can feel a very slight and subtle vibrate in the wheel, and there's a very slight vibrate sound which you only tune into because you can feel it, it's not loud enough for others in the car to pick up on.
I have noticed when I'm parking, if I out more of a full lock clockwise that there's a line of fluid/oil on the drive way.
I've only recently purchased the car and I topped up the PS reservoir , it doesn't seem to have dropped significantly since but there is a definite trail on fluid on the floor.

Is this a common fault or an easily rectifiable issue?

Is it oil, or condensate from the air conditioning?  If the a/c is running you will get water in a line under the car.

It's definitely oil, with the wet weather we've been having recently I get the lovely rainbow colours on the drive..

OK.  Now need to identify the colour to check if it's PAS or engine.

Have a look at the power steering hoses.  A known issue with the ends leaking.  The hose will look wet, and it tends to be the bottom end just inboard of the left front wheel where the hose joins the rack.
