Re: Decision Time F15 X 5 or RR Sport ??
What did the article say in the daily Mail ?, I missed it . Was it re the risk to all luxury vehicles being stolen or just Range Rovers ? I know years ago all 4 x 4s were the choice of ram raiders but now i understand the risk is the new Markets outside Europe ,ie the new rich of the Eastern Block countries who have a large criminal element and no cross border Policing agreements with EEC , so stolen cars are gone for ever once they go East .
I understand its a big problem for Merc, BMW and others but its been hushed up for obvious reasons ,the demand for nearly new stolen luxury cars is clearly serious crime issue which like Richard states are inevitably one step ahead of the software manufacturers for Luxury Car producers.
I am worried if Range Rovers are going to be both expensive to Tax and i am going to have an exorbitant premium for Insurance. sprung on me at renewal. >:(
I wont leave my car at the airport for all these reasons today, as you never get the true value repaid in a total loss or theft , unless you can get an underwriting from the Insurers giving a new car replacement if the car is less then a year old and stolen etc.
My premium for my X5 4D with 12 years NCB and a clean licence is below £ 500 pa ,so i dont want big hike if i chose the RR route next Jan.
I will look on line for the article in the Mail.
Have BMW sorted the laptop method of theft on their latest cars ?

Re: Decision Time F15 X 5 or RR Sport ??
It states that nearly 300 range rovers have been stolen in London in the last 6 months & 63 x5's during the same period, 1 guy has just bought a brand new RRS and his insurance would not cover him. From what I gather the 2012 on x5's are a lot more secure so I was assured when I bought my e70 12 plate & my insurance is only around 450 per year with direct line & I have a few convictions.

It MAY be that the BMWs are "more secure" but frankly I think the theft statistics reflect demand rather than ease of stealing, which is to say that the RRS is seen as highly desirable at the moment by direct purchasers and purchasers of stolen cars alike.
That doesn't help the issue of insuring them though, because the insurers will focus most on the models that are actually costing them. Your ability to secure the vehicle off the road and where you live will be the key factors. On the street in central london will be a no-no if it isnt already. The pool of insurers offering to quote on my X5 that sits in that kind of location is already limited, and I do less than 7000 miles a year, have a full bonus and clean licence. The point of my earlier comment was to say make sure you check this aspect out to see if its an issue for you before you commit.

Re: Decision Time F15 X 5 or RR Sport ??
I booked a test at Pentland Edinburgh before I ordered the X5 to try both. Despite plenty of notice they didn't have one available on the day and the salesman could not be bothered. He did offer to take me 2 miles in an old model. Douglas Park gave me an X5 for the weekend to test.
RRS does look the business on the outside but the Victoria Beckham Evoque interior let it down for me. Too leather handbaggy with nothing happening.
With wait times of up to a year and 2nd hand at almost full price, not for me.
I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee for 2 weeks, great seating and touch screen but bloody awful brakes and all roar and no torque.
Had my X5 M sport for 2 months, been up and down to London a few times but around town aas an everyday car it is great. The DVD player that I never ordered in the system is great bonus when I am forced to wait at the horses.

Re: Decision Time F15 X 5 or RR Sport ??
Interesting thread - I have just had a new demo RR sport for the day, and then swapped to an X5 3.0 M sport for a day. As a current RR owner for the last 8 years I am biased, but then previously had had two X5's which i really liked.
The RR sport technically seems much better, its very smart, looks the business and drives well. The things I didn't like are the technology such as sat nav and menus are a bit old fashioned, but I guess that is down to choice. Economy is nothing like what they say, I averaged 28mpg and that was gentle driving mixed with a bit of zoom, and I found the same on my current RR, economy is nothing like the quoted figures. Dealership were great, and I was well looked after.
The BMW was different in a lot of ways, more gruff, much more punch, less roll in the M sport, better technology, but not quite as good in the looks department. Also seems to have more room generally.
The RR sport is a lot more money, and from my perspective, it is priced at a premium for not a lot more, other than brand and looks.
The RR is a bit like having a posh friend that you go out with every now and then, looks great, but could you spend every day with them - whereas the BMW is just a great car, you throw it around, chuck anything in it, treat it gently or push it hard, and it just does what it does well.
So, and this is very personal to me, I have taken my deposit off the RR Sport, and will get myself an X5. Time will tell if that was the right decision!
Thanks
