front bumper mesh panel removal
front bumper mesh panel removal
Does anyone know if it's possible to remove the upper mesh panel in the front bumper, I managed to smash one while washing the X today
made a massive gash in my finger in the process :'( found the broken pieces so I think I'll be able to repair it with some super glue.

I think you need to take the bumper off. But yes it is replaceable. Why BMW chose plastic for such a fragile part was something I did not understand. Aluminium would have been a much better choice.

Cheers Richard I sussed out that they slide in from one side but wasn't quite sure if you could actually get them out without taking the bumper off.

I think you can buy some Ally mesh from Halfords, or Ebay... and spray it with black under seal type stone chip spray..
Having been involved in vehicle manufacture & costings... at the frustration end wanting better fittings...
The plastic mesh is simply the cheaper option & a clip can be moulded in the same hit, hence less parts, less assembly time on the line and less material costs.
Every 2pence saving, even if it leads to shite parts will be the favoured route, because after a years production it will total £££ Millions, and make the numbers stack up..
The down side... is WE, the buyer get second rate fittings in most cases..
However, I must say, that I absolutely love my X5.
It's the first BMW I've owned, and in comparison to Ford, Renault GM etc, the BMW wins hands down for me... and I can live with the odd cheapy nasty that I uncover occasionally...
I've had the miss-fortune to see Renault, Ford, GM, Chrysler cars built on the production lines, and while there is some brilliant engineering concepts with all of them, it's often the way that some thing tiny done on a silly budget lets the vehicle down for me...
Some of the lash-ups on the X82 Vivario/Renault Vans is ... simply beyond bloody belief... and these machines are often styled/designed in some way by complete bloody idiots who are incapable of changing a tyre, let alone building a vehicle.... but some how these twats design parts of them... it beggers belief !!
OK, rant over, having vallium now and a gin ha ha..

No need for any replacement mesh , I'll be able to piece it back together with the bits of plastic I pulled out of the end of my finger

Ahh yes, safely saved under the skin for later on....
I have a few pieces of a blown up APC in my left shoulder from the last Gulf incursion still, maybe get them out too one day and put them back in the tank lol

Re: front bumper mesh panel removal
You have to remove the bumper to really get at the mesh panel properly.

Cheers I've managed to piece it back together with superglue whilst still in situ.
