Causes of boot rattles/squeaks

Post by Dan Alex » Sun Dec 21, 2014 6:38 pm

Especially in the cold season all sorts of noises come from the back of the bus (x5) - rattles, squeaks, etc.
There's a new one in mine and it's driving me crazy whenever going over speed bumps or potholes etc....like some plastic is loose, have checked everything, the backseat, the plastics on the boot, etc, can't seem to place the source of this, anyone? I believe i'm hearing it on the right side of the vehicle, right at the back, in the boot area somewhere

a lot of noises are caused by the boot lid flexing when the bump stops arent set up right and the lock catch is not adjusted correctly, drove me mad before found out what it was  >:(

AND ? AND? WHAT WAS IT??  I mean, i'm pretty sure it comes from the boot area, but i'm not sure as to where exactly in the boot, what part of it...

Have used rags to dampen the noise, adjusted everything, lubed up the bump stops, tightened the shocks.....STILL drives me mad

I found it was the parcel shelf rattling fixed with some foam pads stuck to each end

Good, thanks! Anyone else?

If we could sum up a list of these then we'd all know where to look...

The best way I found of removing most of the rattles etc. was to adj the bump stops on the tailgate so as they are actually doing something, then, wrap self-amalgamating, ( I do hope that's spelt correctly ), around all the catches.
It worked for me.

A concise list of fixes would be good - as there seem to be so many potential things that can cause tailgate rattles. It could then be set as a sticky in the DIY section ?

In my quest for a rattle free tailgate (not achieved yet) I have adjusted the bump stops to almost the highest setting (means you have to give the tailgate a good slam to close it but I can live with that.

Also, check out

I noticed that the upper latch on my 2003 4.4 was missing the black bump stops and once I sorted it out that removed a rattle from the latch area. Worth checking.

Yes, i do have one of the two bump stops on the upper tailgate missing. But just as a temporary fix, i tried placing there several layers of rubber stacked on top of each other. In theory, it should have fixed it, but apparently my rattling noise comes from somewhere else. Somewhere in the right hand side of the boot, have checked the rear panels, where the sockets are and fuses, also the plastics that go down on each side of the frame of the upper tailgate, think i'm going to strip the whole thing down, piece by piece and see what's what.

Foam pads fix rattles eh.. ???

The only thing that endlessly rattles on endlessly tormenting me in my X5 is my bloody girlfriend.... endless talking about everything.... except things that are relevant to life in general....

Me thinks I will fit a load of foam pads around the mouth area, and gaffer tape over the gob hole too........

I am intrigued reading these posts about adustable bump stops. Mine aren't. Although my stops were there they didn't do anything as they are in fact spring loaded, but at some time a slammed tailgate had blown the spring retaining cap out of the backs of these. This allows the upper tailgate to contact the lower half, as my paint was worn away-might be a cause of a squeak. Now replaced. I would try taking out of the car all removable items such as the spare wheel, wheel chocks, tool kit, jack, and so on. At least you can the eliminate these as a squeak source. Try running with the seats folded. Also try having a helper try to locate the sound whilst you drive.

I had my 14 year old daughter in the back the other day listening for where the rattle was coming from as I drove down an unmade road.

Dad of the year eh ? ;)

Helps though !
