Winter Tyres Vredestein Wintac v's Pirelli Scorpoion Ice and Snow
Hello Guys/Girls,
Ok so I’m going to order some winter tyres for my X5.
I’ve been pretty much set on getting the Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme tyres (255/55/18) but have now seen a good deal on Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow (255/55/18).
Has anyone used either of these tyres and what are your opinions for winter driving?
Ideally if someone has used both types that would be ideal.
I’ve research and both have similar reviews but thought I would ask you X5 experts also.
My car is a E53 4.6is if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance.
Leon.

I have the Vreds in that size on my 4.8iS for 4 ski seasons now and 5/6 months wear in the winter (15k or so).
I think that they are fantastic - amazing grip in all conditions. I drive up to a place 2000m up with uncleared roads and no issues. Also found them good for hammering down the autobahn at 3 figure speeds.
To be fair I have a couple of friends with the Pirellis on Range Rovers who think that they are great.
Both are good choices.
Do check Condor's latest post on pricing for the Vreds.

Both very decent tyres, always used Pirellis on my Range Rover but have used Vreds on my X5 for several years now and swear by them - I use Sessantas in the summer and Wintrac Xtremes in winter. The performance and grip of the Vreds is superb and they wear well, too. Tyreleader had some great offers on the Vreds, £50 less than Tyremen, cheaper than Camskill as well and no delivery costs. My new set arrived last week from Germany, only took 4 days from ordering to having them fitted.

I have the Pirelli's on mine in RFT format and they are fine. Not had any extreme weather to test them recently but in a couple of inches of snow over ice they were fine. Certainly felt more secure than the Dunlop summer tyres!

Sure you've probably bought your tyres by now, but I would always have the Vredesteins. I got a set last year on wheels for just over £1k and happy with them.
I also wouldn't have runflats any more, terrible, ride, noisy and frnakly, once damaged, beyound repair and more cash!

Unless (as with me) your insurers insists you use what the manufacturer does. For me using anything else counted as a 'mod'. Also as mine is still within warranty I have to use OEM approved tyres or BMW will walk away.
I actually find the Pirellis absolutely fine for ride quality, noise is lower than the Dunlops, and repairing is perfectly possible depending upon where the damage is - exactly as with non-RFT tyres - regardless of what a Dealer or larger tyre fitter only interested in selling you new rubber might tell you.

Got my first taste of frosty ice laden roads this morning. Took the wife's slk (on pirelli winters) to pick up my x after the Xmas bash last night. Hers squirmed a little but was very predictable and stopped where you wanted it to. Mine was solid until I stopped on the worst ice patch applied half lock and stabbed the gas pedal. She lurched and then a billion computers caught what I was up to and managed the ice brilliantly. Overall, happy with the ice and snow pirellis on mine and looking forward to more testing conditions, possibly in Scottish Ski resorts in a couple of weeks...
