Engine management light!!!!!
Engine management light!!!!!
I am not sure what if anything is even going on, but on 2 occasions now from a cold start it's has felt like the car is not running on all cylinders for the first 30 seconds when u first start up, the other day it did this, then an orange light came on? that I always call the management light but unsure what it really is? Well this came on and then 5 minutes down the road it went off, I put it down to it being the first time I had driven it for a week and it was maybe clogged up because it was a very long but slow paced journey last time out, even with the light on for those 5 minutes everything was good, power, gear change etc. Then again today, from cold it's sounded a little off for 10 seconds the light came on but this time as I drove off it just flashed then disappeared within 20 seconds of coming on, all has been fine since and it literally does everything it's suopossed to still. Little confused???

Re: Engine management light!!!!!
MMM I hate these little lights, they scare me usually mean expense ! .....
they should make it simple and have a light with a ££ sign on it, so you just know its gonna be expensive...
For about £40 from Flea-Bay, you can get a plug-in OBD checker that will pull failure codes and give a clear diagnostic read-out of what's going on, and provided it is plugged in and testing when the fault shows, it will tell you what is happening..
May sound silly (not meant to be insulting), but.... hopefully, it's not your low oil pressure warning is it ??
Maybe take a picky and paste it here for ideas....
My machine is a diesel, and possibly don't have this dash lamp...
Some one here must have had this symptom light before ??

Re: Engine management light!!!!!
Very expensive repair, good quality oil (0w30) will improve cold start. It was BMW SIB for it, can't find it now.

Technical Service
This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B11 02 05 dated May 2005.
designates changes to this revision
SUBJECT
62 Engine - Rough Idle, Misfire Faults after Cold Start
MODEL
E53 (X5 4.4 i/4.8is); E60, E63/64, E65/66 with N62 from 06/04 up to 02/05 production
SITUATION
Customer may complain of erratic engine idle speed lasting for approximately 20 seconds after a cold start.
Check Engine Soon light may be illuminated and misfire faults for various cylinders (e.g. FC 2742, 2743, 2744,
2745, 2746, 2748, 2749, 274E) may be stored in the DME.
CAUSE
Incorrect tolerances and geometry of Valvetronic intermediate levers are causing uneven cylinder filling during
the transitional cold start period (60 seconds after the engine has been started) when the Valvetronic system is
switching from the initial 6 mm to a minimum 0.3/0.8 mm valve lift.
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis, and after performing diagnostic procedure described below, replace the
Valvetronic intermediate levers.
PROCEDURE
Perform basic engine diagnosis (compression, ignition, fuel pressure, etc) to rule out other potential
causes.
1.
Allow 2. the engine to cool down.
Connect GT1/DIS loaded with CD 44.0, or higher, to a cold vehicle (coolant temperature below 30
deg C) and from the Function Selection select: "Service Functions", "Drive", "Engine management
ME9", "Test runs" and then "Tolerance test, intermediate lever".
3.
4. Start the engine and follow-up the test plan.
Observe rough running values when idle speed stabilizes. If values are in excess of +/- 2.5 accompanied
with noticeable engine vibration (and sometimes Check Engine Soon flashing), then remove valve covers
on both banks.
5.
Look for the intermediate lever production date (stamped on the lever, next to the smaller roller
contacting the eccentric shaft).
6.
If the production date is in the range between "04 180" and "04 324" (e.g. day 324 of the year 2004),
then the whole set of intermediate levers (16) has to be replaced. The same classification of levers must
be used when ordering the intermediate levers (classification number is stamped below production date).
There are 5 classifications of levers used in the N62 engine.
7.
ote: In an individual cylinder head, all levers must have the same classification, but two different
classification of intermediate levers may be used in one engine (e.g. bank 1: classification 2, bank 2:
1 of 3
classification 3).
Important: The lower production range of the affected intermediate levers is only an approximation. It is
possible that levers produced prior to "04 180" (but not earlier then "03 363") may have certain deviations in
tolerances.
For Valvetronic intermediate lever replacement procedure, refer to RA 11 37 012 (bank 1) and RA 11 37
014 (bank 2), found in BMW TIS.
8.
IMPORTAT:
Improved intermediate levers are currently available from 1. our Parts Department.
In the event of a reproducible customer complaint proceed with the diagnostic and repair procedure.
There is no need to contact Technical Hotline.

Cheers guys, i only ever use the Castro stupidly expensive oil recommended and I only her out the even more stupidly priced shell v performe fuel in. Don't know why i guess it's just habbit now, all has been good the last few days, but it hasn't been as cold so I will just wait and see how it goes, she is in for a service after Xmas so they can do some checks then I guess, they do love to find more reasons to take money from u.

Re: Engine management light!!!!!
Sounds like u have been driving mine. Only 2nd time but I had it today. I didn't have any fault codes. It did it one cold morning last week and it went in garage for something else and no codes.
My battery has got low just got my ctek charger so tomorrow it gets a full charge hoping this might cure this odd cold start problem.
Just had full service few weeks ago with good oil.

Re: Engine management light!!!!!
hi guys I had exactly the same problem on my 4.8is... [noticeably more when outside temp is lower that 5 degrees]... I did a scan and it popped up with P0300 - random misfire on all cylinders. I was planning to replace coils + plugs but doubt that would provide the cure?
I also noticed that very strange restrain feeling that car isn't 'breathing' properly and when I floored it couple times [hot or cold] it does come up with blue-ish smoke fogging off rear windscreen for a moment.
in addition... I also smell a petrol which is another strange thing although tad normal during cold days when atmospheric pressure is lower... btw, vacuum hoses/CCV's have all been replaced and the car was recently serviced with Castrol Magnatec 10W 40 oil.

Re: Engine management light!!!!!
I have add this light on for about 6months, and first of all the car is spluttery, but runs fine now. Plan to get fixed next month (bonus month). Get yourself a scanner and you will be able to check what the problem is, plus all those other issues you never knew about (to cause more sleepless nights).
The one i got was this one...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251602576446
although they have up'ed the price now as I paid £11.98

Valve stem seal for smoking, valvetronic lifters or oil pump for bad cold start.
