Been quoted £400 for the corner bumper repaint, a scratch/dent repair on the bonnet (witch is a bigger job than I thought!)and painting a rear top boot spoiler.

Does that sound an ok price??

Sounds reasonable.  My rear bumper re spray after I got rear ended was over £700 at a BMW Bodyshop.  They had to do the whole thing to try to match it in.

Hard to say for sure without seeing some pics but yet it does seem about right. But get other quotes and you will know!

And once you've got it repaired, invest in a dash cam. blackvue dr6500, front and rear cameras with motion detection
- I will be installing mine this weekend.

plus the guy is going to paint a Hamman style top spoiler for it too......£400 dont seem too bad if the job is good and they seem to have a good name.

Smokey ,
please let me know how you get on fitting the cameras etc as it seems a good idea if not too difficult, Im not much of a tech head etc  :(

How does the motion detection work? Does it always record and only keep it if there is motion?

I was thinking that in this case, if it starts recording when the car has been hit, you will not see a plate, perhaps just an image of the side of a car driving away.

Shock detection over a preset G-force is the usual.  It does need permanent power to enable that.  Cameras record all the time and mark that section as an 'incident', at least that's how mine works.  Marked sections are not recorded over when the card loops.

I want one which I can take to different cars really. On the Porsche there are lighter sockets under the glove box so you can hide the cables perfectly, the X5 I am not sure yet on how to do it.

Don't really want units all over the place, just a single one I can click in the cars I use.

Does that exist ...

My Roadhawk HD is hard wired into the car and not permanently powered.  You could simply buy several power kits and then just move the camera.  You will also need spare mounts as these are best stuck to the screen rather than on a vacuum mount.

Vacuum mounts tend to detach upon impact whereas a stuck on mount will allow the camera to pan or tilt at impact and not fall off.

There is a power point on the right side of the tunnel if you remove the carpet trim panel.  Part way back is the power point for the 12V front socket.  This was the recommended point for the power that BMW told me about.  The camera I have has no standby power so will not record parked incidents.

And there is a BMW system now too which wires into the car and has front and rear cameras.  It's around £280 plus installation, and it looks pretty straightforward to fit, though fiddly running the cables front to back.

Was not aware of the socket, that could be useful to use there. Will have a read on what is available.
