Aha.....

And yes you're right.  The engines I've been around with the RAF were very clean.  Soot indicated a problem!!

lol....yeah soot especially in a jet engine usually means that there is an inefficiency such as blocked airflow in the combustion side of things, they sometimes start to show a little soot as the compressor fans begin to wear due to uneven balance/wear of the blades.
Like I said, Wynns dpf cleaner really does work at cleaning soot out,however,if you wanted to clean the lifelong actual carbon deposits out then the only real way of doing that is to remove the part and manually chip it away as it is as hard as the metal it is clinging to. If soaked long enough with kerosene it will degrade into a mush thru a chemical reaction and exit thru the exhaust, but it takes longer than half an hour to acheive that  ;)

I don't disagree with what youre saying (although I suspect jet engines operate at a somewhat higher temperature and that may have something to do with it!) and in the good old days it was referred to as a decoke ..... and I don't buy the fact (until I see empirical evidence) that engine cleaners will improve consumption by several mpg as some claim.
BUT my point is that none of these cleaners cost £80-£100 as I've seen quoted for Terraclean !

Yep Smee you are right,it will not remove the actual carbon (set hard) but will remove all the carbon soot from the DPF, catalytic convertor etc, to remove the actual carbon then it would have to soak for much longer, the other action of kerosene is that it burns very hot.

A little test if anyone is up to spending a tenner to find out is to half fill your tank with diesel and add a full bottle of wynns dpf cleaner to it, drive for 20 miles to home at a steady pace  to get it into the system and then turn off and leave over night, set off in the morning and warm the engine up then kick down whilst looking in your rear view mirror.......bet you weren't able to see anything behind you for 10 sedconds  :)), it usually takes 2 kick downs to get a totally clear view again.

Something to note tho everyone, there are treatments/additives available to clean the EGR valve.......However I try to imagine them working I simply give up as all that travels up to the egr valve is hot spent gas that eventually cools as it enters the inlet manifold and sets into a sludge over time. The only way to remove that is to clean it manually  ;)

I thought about getting this done pre remap , but never did in the end

I run my derv on vpower , as I think fuel quality has a lot to do with this , iv noticed in the usa they have intake services , first I was like wtf is a intake service , but it's basicly a terraclean, interesting story tho (and can't talk for the effects for anything else here) but I'm fairly "in" on the ford side of life (race a focus ect) and from ford usa , they say do not do intake service on there new Ecoboost engines , turns out that it damages the turbo , and on the Eco boost its a fairly expensive part

How it's damaged is this terraclean burns silly hot , on a ecoboost the turbo is only about 3-4" away from the head due to the design of the manifold , the heat gets so hot (needed to burn the carbon out) that it damages the turbo

Now I know we don't have ecoboost engines fitted , but we do have a direct inject turbo engine fitted , and that for me was enough to be cautious about this service , for now , prob better taking off the intake and giving everything a good clean out by hand/dread mill and a good hover/blow out
