preventing seized on wheels

Post by Smeeagain » Tue Dec 28, 2010 12:48 pm

I have a 2004 E53 X5 3.0d Sport with 19 inch alloys (which I believe are standard) - with the various tyre changes I have had to do over the last couple of days (see my other posts about having tyres slashed), I have encountered wheels being seized on. This has resulted in me having to get the car high enough to put it on axle stands and get underneath and set about the wheels with a few sharp swift taps with a mallet which got the wheels off fairly quickly.
My question is, to avoid this happening in the future, can I take the wheels of and clean up the centre hub and grease it before replacing the wheels. If so is there a recommended anti seize compound I should use ?

When i changed the brake pads on mine they were stuck on. I found loosening the wheel nuts a little then grabbed the top and give it a good push and pull (wobble it) using the weight of the car and had no problem getting them off afterwards. Refit with a little copper slip.
Buy the little toothpaste tube because it will last for years and can be used for your pads as well.

In addition to the copper grease, I also bought a set of WheelMates for my M so no bits of metal actually touch eachother, resulting in non stuck wheels.

thanks guys - I tried the wobble approach bit to no avail. I sued copperslip/copperease on classic cars I@ve had on the past so will have somewhere. The classics Ive had didn't have alloys hence the reason for asking. Just Googled Wheelmates and that looks like it would do the job nicely

Many thanks
