Webasto - how to use it?

Post by RenoHuskerDu » Sun Nov 30, 2014 7:47 pm

My car came with Webasto and a separate remote control key.  I have no idea if it works.  It looks simple enough for a yank: "on" and "off" buttons are all it has.

I had Webasto on a TLC80 a few years back and noted that it draws electrical power to run its burner and the vehicle's heater fan. I just might replace the car battery this winter before using the Webasto.

I've sussed out from other threads that the Webasto is a relatively-rare option in the UK. Hence the deafening silence.  ::)

It is indeed......especially as it is a £1,000+ option on the E70 and newer.

I determined that it works last night. "Determined" is a bit of a euphemism, because it was accidentally started by the remote control in my pocket . It ran for an hour in the garage, creating quite a bit of exhaust. The good news is I now know where the (huge) battery is so I can charge it. I suppose that there are more handy charge points under the bonnet.

It's supposed to monitor the battery and fuel conditions and shut down so the battery does not get flattened or you get left high and dry with no fuel.

Sweet.  Little thoughtful stuff like this is why we pay so much for our cars.

I ran a 2a trickle charger all night on the battery, and in the morning it was still in charge mode, as opposed to maintenance.  That is one hugantish battery, and it was down more than a tad.

2Ah is a little small for a 90Ah battery!!  And yes it is a big one.  It'll get there eventually.

I'm putting an Optima in the Polo next week, and gave thought to replacing the X5 battery too. But it looks absolutely new, so I'll soldier on this winter. What's more, the X5 was positively toasty inside, so the Webasto works fine indeed. Now if only it had a DPF too...I remember the nasty exhaust it made in my TLC80.
