Rear brake pads

Post by Dr C » Sat Nov 29, 2014 9:09 am

Hello all.

Anyone had to replace brake pads on their F15 yet? Mine has done 15,500 miles and iDrive is telling me I've got 3,200 miles to go on the rears, and 4,700 miles to go on the fronts. I've got the five year service pack (first service done yesterday - all good), I suspect I know the answer to this, but I assume the brake pads are not covered under this?

Anyway, anyone got a rough idea of how much BMW would charge for fitting both sets? Is it worth going elsewhere? I think it would be sensible to change both fronts and rears at the same time given they've got a similar amount of life left in them.

Cheers

Correct, the pads aren't covered under the standard service pack.

Now the F15 my be different but needing pads changed under 20k seems low, I'm on 45k at present and still have 3k left before the rears need changed, 9k for the fronts.

Not sure on price.  I enquired about rear pads on the last 520 and BMW wanted nearly £200 pounds, went to an indy who charged half that.  I was also there when the dealerships own van turned up to deliver the pads so I know I was getting OEM.

Cheers Don, it does seem that the F15 needs consumables more frequently than other cars I've had. I'm not sure if the iDrive has a huge factor of safety built into its numbers, or if it's an accuracy issue etc., but I'll take it to a good indy closer to the time and see what's what.

Sounds early, but if you use your brakes a lot then they wear quicker......

I was told I could expect new discs & pads at least yearly on my E53, but they lasted 6 years and were covered under the service pack that I had (comprehensive).  Not that they needed doing under it!

Like Don's, my X6 is saying around 45k for the pads at present - three years away at current use rate.
