Transmission Failsafe Program

Post by mattyc » Thu Nov 20, 2014 7:16 pm

I get this error sporadically. Basically when accelerating hard I get a strange whine from the gear box then get thrown into Transmission Failsafe Program. I think the car sticks the gearbox into failsafe mode to protect the gearbox.

Here is my dilemma - we have a warranty on the car. I have it booked in with Bavarian next week for diagnosis.

If the diagnosis shows the fault is with the gearbox and it needs repaired I can claim back diagnosis and cost of repair.

If diagnosis shows it is something else causing the issue I have to fork out Bavarians £100 / hour fees with no claim back.

Can anyone give me advice on this error?  Have the full error codes from bmw scanner 1.4.0 but can't attach?

You need to upload the images to a photo share site and cross link to them.  I use Photobucket, and there are plenty of others.  Codes need to be from the gearbox itself.

You need to get it looked at ASAP.  It could be the gearbox or transfer box, or a diff.

Thanks Richard. Error codes pasted out below. I think I will maybe try and get a local specialist to diagnose first. If he points in the direction of gearbox failure I can take the warranty route.

The VTG one is relevant.  That's the transfer case.  It needs an oil change as a minimum.  It isn't a lifetime oil so has exceeded its useful life.

See this thread.

Thanks Richard. Do you think the gearbox would go into "Transmission Failsafe Program"  if an oil change is required?

Will chat to the local guy tomorrow.

Chatted to a guy at Autotechnic in Belfast on Friday past. Extremely helpful and has advise that getting an oil change is definitely the first thing to do (Bavarian would advise the same thing apparently). He also mentioned that if you hear a yelp from the gear box (which I do) then oil change is vital.

Booked in for 1st December will let you know how I go.

I looked at the following the other day and I'm tempted to do the same on my car... any advise re whether listed parts are sufficient or if anything else needs to be added?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221522006173? ... EBIDX%3AIT

for my info... how long does it take to complete the job / avg. cost of doing so? Thx
