2003 X5 3.0d Starting Issues ' Please Read '
Hi guys sorry for another 'hard starting' thread but I'm not getting my answers from other posts I've been reading.
Basically i bought the X5 a few months ago and it all went 'pete tong' when i filled up at Tesco one day, it would not start! Battery flat and pushed back outta the forecourt, got the jump leads on and away I went (never used tesco diesel again).
Everything went well for some time. Randomly one day when low on diesel it would not start at all. From then anytime it fell under 1/2 tank it would not start. I kept the tank always well over half and everything was ok until now.
It started this morning, drove to the Texaco garage (10miles away) I always use filled up and drove to the gym. Now its not even making an effort to start. Its turning over fast but not firing, occasionally whilst turning over it will try fire but not start.
Genuinely I appreciate you taking the time to read and reply with any advice or stories at all.
Ryan

sounds like a supply pump issue someone will be along who knows more than me, but i think the saddle tank on the X5 has a pump on one side to send fuel to the other side of the tank and a main one to pump to the high pressure pump under the bonnet. If these pumps fail or the connecting pipe comes off then you could get the symptoms your describing. Has the car been mis-fueled in the past and had a fuel drain ? I ask because if the accesed the tank via the drivers side hole they may have dislodged the connecting pipe that runs between the 2 sides of the tank.

Thank you for the reply! In my time the tanks have not been touched. It makes sense to me for it to be pump related but as with everything there is always someone out there who knows a hell of a lot more than most and its good to get a multiple of opinions to annoy my mechanic with tomorrow

Here's the intank set up for your car and looks like just 1 pump and some connecting pipe work.

This is the tank arrangement, for your car and shows the pipework and another filter/pump in line.

Other faults to consider could be a blocked fuel filter (near side about halfway down I believe) or a failed/failing fuel pump relay (it's above the front fusebox) as the latter can cause a no start despite all the cranking. Had the latter on mine. £10 part.
Get your Indy to look at the fault codes for things like fuel rail pressure and pumps as suggested above.

Just to add more confusion to the story, its now starting again. Surely if something was broke it would remain broke rather than intermitting?

Sounds electrical to poss relay or fuel pump.

Either way, tescos fuel is not the cause. Sounds electrical to me, but agreed, worth checking fuel filter also.

I only serviced it last month so i know the filter is good. Its intermitting which makes me think its a hot / cold issue. Either way I'll have to get it on a computer and see what the mechanic says. Thanks again guys
