webasto heating finally fixed

i was very new to x5's when i bought my 2005 3.0d sport in september always admiring them but little knowledge.
i own and run a small village garage and get involved with most repairs but have very few customers with x5's so its been a fun learning curve.
when i started looking into the parking heater conversion i thought what a great idea and so cheap.!! how wrong could i be?

Â£35 to maplin got me the remote relay and a small led tpo tell me when it is on and half an hour to fit. Great i thought. did it work. no!! after running for about 30 seconds and then stopping and would only restart after unplugging.
after 3 times of trying this thought i would give up for the night and went to park the car up.!! Flat battery meant no start untill charged. Â£100 later and a new battery fitted i tried again(old battery tested ok but as 5 years old thought it was time for a new one). Did it work. !NO is the answer.

a quick search on ebay led me to and inpa program and cable. another Â£120 (but useful for other things i know) This caused some stress at first getting it working but got there in the end. faults listed in heater were for glow plug. Spoke to webasto at doncaster who gave me a number for a dealer in mansfield who were very helpful and told me to strip the heater and remove all the carbon from inside. that turned out to be a nice quick easy job but was time wasted as still no good and fault still the same. Â£165 later and a new burner complete with glow plug fitted and the heater started and made heat for the first time.
But not for long. Five mins of running and the heater shut down again.

back to the diagnostics i went and fault was overheat but why when there was no faults so after a bit of messing realised the additional water pump was not running so ordered a new one of those another Â£96.
another nice easy fit and to my surprise at last it works.

so finally when i press the remote i now have a warm car 15 mins later. not sure its was worth all the stress and cost but once i had started it made sense to finish.
hope this helps somebody in there quest for heat.

dave could you possibky do a little write up just kn how to split and clear the carbon build up?? much appreciated if so

Glad you got it sorted Dave! I couldnt have done without mine this last few weeks! Now you have it you wont be able to do without it in winter!

Hi Dave.

Youll find that it was worth the expense and the trouble. Its great to be able to go out to a car that has warmed up before driving.

Much better too as its easier to defrost the car quickly and the fact that the engine has warmed up too is much better for its longevity. I use mine all the time when its cold.

I took some photos when i took mine apart and am sure i have a document on my laptop that shows how too do a decoke. I will hunt it out and see if i can stick it on here

Bit off topic but I have the factory fitted system and the batteries went on the remote, hunted high and low for them eventually found them in the Boots in the camera section.

I'm gonna beat that pump with a stick.

Well, tap it with a screwdriver hoping it just needs a little persuasion to free it off.

i tried that with mine but it made no difference while it was still fitted. try popping off one of the pipes and moving it with a screwdriver thats all my old one needed. remember i now have a spare if you need it

Hi.

I recently changed out my recirc pump only to find that the Combustion air fan is faulty too.

Anyone ever had to change one of these out?

Can it be done without stripping the webasto out of the vehicle?

Any pointers for where one might get the part?

Is it usual that the diagnostic will pick up an exact fault? Or could it be that something else is causing the combustion fan to throw up an error?

The physical symptom is the unit starts, heats, vents from the exhaust under the vehicle and then cuts out.

This is then followed by thick white smoke "seeping" rather than "venting" - its nothing on fire...it looks like its what was left in the chamber escaping of its own accord rather than being vented out.

If that makes sense !

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I always get nervous when there are fluids involved !!

ring webasto uk in doncaster and they will give you a contact number for a dealer in your area. they were very helpfull
