Glad that you've got that sorted!  It's obviously something everyone with a pre-LCI X5 or pre-2010 X6 (6-speed box) needs to look for and perhaps service now when they have the chance.

I've come across an 8-speed unlock procedure that may work electronically on that type of box due to the unlock access point having been discontinued.

But it still should be in the Owners Manual!

Agreed, anyone with older e70 really does need to remove that lock mechanism and either leave it off or grease it as its nothing but a headache when you actually need to use it.

I finally found a little mention on page 58 of my manual.  Thats about it.

I just pray this isn't going to be too ££££.

Would love it if it was just a reset, recode battery and possibly IBS sensor replacement!!

Will find out tomorrow I guess.  Will update thread if and when it is sorted, as so often you find threads similar to a problem you are experiencing, to find that they never get to the conclusion and remedy of fault.

Speak soon.

Its something electrical, because the steering lock neither engages or disengages upon key being entered /removed etc

Well well well

UPDATE:

The car taken to Green Bower BMW:

Diagnostic and turns out, all it was, was a poor connection on the jump Terminal in engine bay which wasn't giving power to the starter motor!!! Cleaned up, greased and tightened, and now starting perfect!!

[emoji1][emoji2][emoji3][emoji2][emoji1][emoji4]

The cost, £80 diagnostic!!!

And they have put old battery back in as its perfectly fine!! so I can send new battery back to battery megastore.co.uk and get money back.

Delighted!!

Just wish I hadn't listened to AA man and changed starter as the old one was fine!! there was me trying to save costs and avoid dealership prices.  Lesson learned, should have gone straight there and saved myself the cost of a starter!!

After all the 'challenges' I'm glad it was just something simple and easy to fix.

My limited experience with the AA is similar.  They once diagnosed a loss of coolant on a new car as a blown head gasket.  It turned out to be a missing hose clip meaning under pressure the pipe simply blew off and dumped the coolant!!

I've not come across that issue before.  Those nuts are done up pretty tight!
