Pre heating car

Not sure if i read on here or some where else but last night i was working till 1am this morning and as it was cold i went out and set through the I drive what i thought was a pre heater for the inside of the car ? I thought the heated seats came on to warm the inside of the car ? I know from reading on here that the e70 does not have the aux heater the e53 did but you could still do what i said above.! So out i came from work (with a smug look on my face) to what i thought would be a nice warm mist free car  ::) BUT when i got inside the only thing working was cold air coming from vents as the fan was on low  :'(  Have i done something wrong or is this not possible ?

Auxilary ventilation, not auxilary heating . The E53 diesels had the Wabesco heaters to heat up the engine block more quickly. The E70 didn't need it as the engine block heats up quickly, so no need to have a webasco to help it heat up to an operating temperature.
The auxilary ventilation is for hot. Countries I think, so you can cool the car, not to heat the engine or cabin.

I would say it was more of a cost cutting exercise on the e70 and little else!!

I think it was partly a comfort thing.  Where the E53 had the webasto the E70 has a ceramic heater to help warm up the interior quickly

I have a separate keyfob for auxiliary heating.. not used it yet though as i've only had it since may

The 'N' generation diesel engine does not need it as it warms up faster.  The primary reason for installing it was to heat the coolant faster so to get the engine off its 'cold' mode earlier and that is not needed with the current engines.

Auxillary Heating was simply a by product of the fact that the Webasto was there for the 'M' series diesel engine.

Mine actually has the optional Webasto but I have yet to use it. I suppose I should post about it when I try it. It has its own remote control, which is bigger than the BMW key itself.

I had  auxillary pre heating on a Merc CL 500  a few  years ago, when i read the owners handbook it said latent heat from a hot engine is stored in a ceramic block, and in the winter  i used it occasionally , after  parking the car ,with the engine off  you pre set the fan heater  to blow warm air into the cabin  for approximately 20 - 30 minutes.The  auxillary cabin fan heater  kept the car interior  warm  if i remember for up to an hour, before the automatic switch of happened so as not to drain the  car battery .  I have never checked if my  2011 X5  4D has this feature but i will look as it was a nice feature on really cold days.  Bit late really as i ve had this X 5 three years now !!!  :xmassad:

My E53 had the auxiliary heater - diesel powered - that could be set with a timer on the same panel used by the satnav.  The idea was it would warm up the engine block and the cabin prior to setting off on bitter cold mornings.  I had the car 5 years and never used it.  It would have been useful in Finland, but despite cold winters here in NE England it was never necessary.  I was also a bit windy about setting a diesel powered furnace going when the car was in the garage half an hour before I got there!!

For info, the VIPER alarm I have had fitted had the option of iPhone control from which the engine can be started to preheat the car.
I understand also that it can be set to automatically do the preheating at the same time every day.
