transmission thump...funny thing has happened???!

Post by chelsea » Mon Nov 10, 2014 6:35 pm

I gave the old girl a good clean yesterday and seeing as I needed to take pics of the AUX heater for a topic on here I decided for the second time  ever :-[ to open the bonnet and took a look at the oil levels etc, I found the engine oil was at the min level so topped it back up with new oil.

I have a slight variable transmission thump from 2nd to 1st mostly when commuting, only seems to happen after being stood around in traffic really and its not getting any worse so I am learning to live with it, I do understand the route cause of it being the primary shaft bush wear but after topping the oil in the engine back up I am 100% that the thump is much better and doing it less.
Anyone any ideas why it would do this??????....beats me!

I had mine serviced as a preventative measure, as I'm a service engineer as a job I see customers wait until they have a problem then think a service will sort it out. When the problem arises, it's usually too late. It's easy to say get it serviced 1000 miles before it breaks.
Oil doesn't last forever. get it Changed !!!! Don't listen to the scaremongering that says, service it and it will kill it, no one says that about engine oil.
If it's fecked an oil service is TOO LATE. :)

I take mine to a automatic gearbox specialist, you don't actually save that much buying the parts yourself!  8)

It's certainly close enough for me to drive over and wait around for them to do it to far away to leave it with them though. I will give them a call and see what they say. Thanks

Average price is £300-£350 at a specialist/Indy.

Main dealer will sell the filter kit and genuine oil but it costs more than the above quoted £140 !!

I've used the automatic gearbox centre in Brighton on all my X5's & always been £140, maybe I'm getting a returning customer discount!
Think it is a average cost as a friend of mine took his X5 to a gearbox specialist in Eastbourne & he paid £120 cash!  8)

Hi Guys, I've got a 2011 e70 8 speed with 25k on the clock would you recommend a gearbox oil change now? I've got a slight delay changing down from 2nd to 1st and when 1st is engaged a very slight thump - not Silky smooth as other changes anyway....
