Hi guys,
Ive got a 2004 Facelift X5 with 100k on the clock, i have been tempted to have a remap done but have been told this may not be a good idea due to the mileage.
Is this true, ?? the car has a good history and has been well looked after, runs perfect.
Any advice appreciated.

The recommendation not to do it will be in part based on the wear and tear on the components, and in part on the gearbox failure likelihood. The gearbox will be the highest risk.
As with anything that is worn, upgrading the power/torque at this stage is always more risky. It may not cause any issues at all but any remapper with any honesty will advise you as you have been.

My new to me 05 X5 d sport has apparently been mapped at some time by the previous owner to the last one, I am going to try and confirm this and what state of tune soon but can defo confirm that mine is doing 44mpg (on the screen)at a steady 65 mph which I think is well worth having it done regardless of any power hikes.
100k is nowt for a well serviced big diesel but having now kicked around a few different bmw forums on the net then a few things are worth pondering......depending on its previous use then the auto box and transfer box of the x5 can be/get a bit chocolate around 130k so putting extra stress on them with loads more power may or may not speed that up , much the same with any car really,I already have a very slight transmission bump (going from 2nd into 1st) at 118k.

Have a browse on here re consumption - you may well be getting good consumption but the screen are inaccurate by 2-3mpg is the general consensus - it is very unlikely that you are getting 44mpg in reality

I don't think you should let it hold you back.
The main concern with a remap is that it's going to vastly increase your torque. The fuse in the driveline is the transmission, so too much torque and that's what's going to pop. An option is to chose a remap that is more conservative. Or if you go for the full blown results tune and just make sure you don't do silly/abusive things like launch the car, stall it up on the torque converter or tramp it to cause a downshift to often. Instead, roll onto the power to get the weight moving then mat it - it's your best method to protect the transmission
Reality is, the tune might bring forward a failure - it might not.

Guys thanks for the info, looks like i need to consider the long term results if i decide to go ahead, whilst on the subject of the dreaded auto box failure, i have a small jerk when slowing down and the gears change from 2nd to 1st, is this a sign of the box on its way.? What are the options with regards to repair of these, can recon boxes be got hold of or is it game over, any ideas of cost on the boxes.

I had my '05 3.0d done not long after I bought it 5 years ago at around 80k KMS
275PS / 535NM and will also return up to 42MPG on a run, well worth doing

My 03 done at 80,000 miles. Albeit AFTER I had the gearbox rebuilt. (yes, 25 hours after collecting it - Private sale - That takes some recovering from !) But it definitely transformed the vehicle.
At 100K SOMETHING Is going to go pop sooner or later, but if it has been well serviced, maybe not yet eh? ::)
