Idrive oil level too high?
Idrive oil level too high?
Just had an oil change at an Indy, well a week ago
Got playing with the idrive and noticed the idrive oil level status is too high
3.0sd, so checked the dipstick after a short drive so car is warm and level
The oil is probably coming to the top of the "max" wording plastic part on dip stick
Is this too high, or a start of another issue
Did some quick reading and some have had oil sensor changed, idrive reset, one thread even talked about fuel, dpf issue etc.
Hoping to swing past the Indy if they are open tomorrow

Re: Idrive oil level too high?
I had this on my X6 and the Dealer told me off.....and then apologised when I told them the only people adding oil were them! Seems to be a common issue. I haven't had anything replaced though.

Did you/ dealer take some out?
Did it fix the message on idrive?

Went to the Indy
He checked the dipstick
It was a touch over the max line, and sensitive sensor
Could have drained some out but its near perfect really
Nice to have the reassurance

Without being a tad alarmist, one must always be aware of a risk with diesel motors. If a leaking injector is introducing too much fuel into a cylinder, that fuel will accumulate with the motor oil in the crankcase, and elevated oil level will be the first symptom you see. You may first hear a rough idle.
It does not sound like this is your case.

Thanks
I like to be alarmist, better to be safe than sorry
The Indy just changed my oil and I know how much they put in as I supplied 2x4L oil
One had some left so I know it's not too much
But the above is good to know

No message in the iDrive. They found it during a 'safety check' when my tyres were swapped from Summer to Winter. And yes they took a little out.
With regard to the fuel in the oil, you would also see your mpg plummet as the fuel consumption would rise as well. It needs a lot of fuel to get through given the minute amounts used per cycle and if (like me) you are diligent in checking you would notice the change in the oil in good time.

Re: Idrive oil level too high?
This warning was passed to me by my cousin the VW mechanic, in an effort to talk me out of a Q7 or A6.
It worked.
To be fair, I had heard of the risk before. Supposedly, it happens to our cars too, but rather more rare than on VWs.

Re: Idrive oil level too high?
Bristol to birm run today and the usual 29-30mpg I see on motorways today
So didn't see fuel consumption plummet

Re: Idrive oil level too high?
Hello Celia/ Richard and all,
Well i've had that same "Oil Level to high " on the I Drive fault displayed as well.. I have checked the level on the dipstick and it appears at max but not above. .Tomorrow morning the cars into main dealer for service at 20,000 miles , had the fault displayed twice in the last few months, and its an oil service tomorrow ( 10 Nov ) so i will mention it to the service guys. I will post their comments here on wednesday !
PS Ive also been told this week by the main dealer when i telephoned to book the car in for a service ,i have a recall notice on my prop shaft ( all 2011 X5 4D ) anyone know of this issue.? They will inspect and re book the vehicle if replacement item required under warranty .

Re: Idrive oil level too high?
The propshaft issue is real and is due to faulty construction leading to excessive backlash and the potential to break one or more of the bolts leading to the shaft detaching! The Dealer will check the amount of play and replace the shaft if there is a problem.
It only affected a few hundred cars....mine was done months ago.....and was being done at the time of the next service, though you could insist it was done earlier (which I did).

Re: Idrive oil level too high?
Hi Richard
Back from main dealer early, inspection service and prop shaft check all completed, like you said for excess play. No play so all ok but the cars only done 20,000 so i wouldn't expect wear on anything like a Propshaft .
As i drove out of the forecourt " Oil level too High " picture came up as i checked the dealer had reset service interval date/mileage on the i drive system., so i did a 180 and went back in. They reset it and said it was possibly due to the car being on a ramp. ( and my drive has a slight downhill slope so when i start it in the morning may shift the oil in the sump to the rear. ? ) They said it would re set itself after a few miles driving which it seems to have done on my way home from the dealer, 15 miles. :'(
Could it really be that the i sensor for oil level is just too sensitive re car incline at start up ?

Re: Idrive oil level too high?
Glad it's sorted. My propshaft was replaced with 15k on the clock due to play. Very quick job to change it. Under 30 mins.
