non standard/BMW amp

Post by centurion » Fri Nov 07, 2014 4:28 pm

quick Q... I'd like to update or slightly refresh sound system in my vehicle which was built with 'std sound system (e.g. no amp or DSP).

Being a facelift model I wouldn't want to start changing speakers and be a noisy neighbor with massive bass in the boot but wanted to target this from a different angle... add an amplifier to the setup. Would that be doable and more importantly will it enhance sound quality over and above what I already have?

Any advise is welcomed...

An amp won't give you much yield against the existing speakers. Remember the current setup does have an amp already albeit built into the BM54 unit.

To get the best out of it, an amp should be added but then upgrade the front door speakers for components (even though you have grill by the wing mirror there is nothing behind it). Mids in the door with a crossover to the tweeters in these grills will make for better sound. The low-end frequencies can only be achieved with a sub and it does make all the difference. I'm like you, don't want to be heard thumping down the street but I do like the frequency across the whole range.

cheer Sanj... do you have any recommendation re tweets and what size to go for?

when you say crossover, is this a special connection or simply a matter of extending wiring to mids in the door card? sorry for my bluntness  :)

I'm tempted but want to know of it will work/could be retrofitted to e53 or perhaps not?

You could send your existing BM54 away to Baris and have him upgrade it, which is what I'm going to do.
The results are very good and it's probably cheaper than buying another/new amplifier.
