What is the most you have had out of your tyres ?
Post by ex540d » Tue Nov 04, 2014 9:09 pm
I have recently bought a 2010 X5 40d M Sport with 20" wheels. It has 36,000 on the clock.
The car is running on Bridgestones. Front (new) Rear (3mm)
I am looking to change the rear ones soon but i am not sure what to change them to. I would like a decent brand which last a long time as they are expensive tyres.
How many miles have people got out of a set of tyres on their X5's ?
Thanks

Mind you driving is pedestrian in Canada. All straight roads and traffic lights. Tyres last longer than brake discs...

My rears went on at 12000 , now on 25000 with about 3000 on winters. They're nearly shot, so that's 10,000 miles from conti contact SSRs. 40d, 19", mainly highland roads and motorways. Not good in my book but local roads seem notably abrasive. Definitely more wear on the insides and worse on the nearside overall.

I have just purchased a 2011 X5 4.0D M Sport with 20"

For supply of tyres give blackcircles.com a go. Have always found them competitive.

There are a lot of threads out on the web about E70s consuming tyres quickly. It's a big heavy car with a lot of torque and good brakes. As the car adverts all say in the US, "YMMV" !
2011 E70 40d well kitted from the factory, RaceChip 375hp
2005 E53 3.0d, manual gearbox, sport susp, RaceChip 278hp

Just replaced front RFT tyres on my X5 4D at 19,600 approx, they had a bald edge 18-20mm wide but 4 mm depth on the remaining 290 mm width. . The rear 315 /20 RFT have already been replaced by main dealer as i bought the X5 with 8000 miles on ,now they have 4 mm approx left across the tread, so they might just get through the winter. The front RFT 275/ 20 , i find wear on the outside edges a lot faster than my previous three X5 3 .0 D M Sports.
Two reasons i have been told cause the extra wear , and i have had tracking checked, 1) its a 4 D with 306 bhp so more torque /wear due power and 2) this car has the M sport suspension "Delete option" , so it rolls a bit more in corners . i love the M Sport looks re the body styling but not the extra firm ride so i chose this X5 three years ago . M sport suspension on BMWs is Class beating fantastic re handling ,ok on car like an M3 i owned years ago, but a bit harsh on X5s with RFTs. Both my 3 previous X 5s were 20 " RFT supplied and i never enjoyed the rumble and tram lining issues of the RFTs not to mention the tyre life or issues of a cracked rim after hitting a small pothole in my last 3 .0 M sport X 5 D, that cost me £600+ for a new rim and tyre.
With regards to comments by other people posting re OEM tyres, i suspect people who buy new vehicles drive them with kid gloves until the novelty wears off so the first set of tyres last a bit longer, and as posted the suspension settings and set up is all new so no kerb bending tracking issues. I budget for 12,000 miles on RFTs as i dont like to drive them down to legal minimums 2mm . All RFT s seem to wear adversely on one edge in one way on another, which is music to the tyre industry who are rubbing their hands with BMW owners the last ten years !
Never had 19 " on any of my X 5, but i hear they last a lot longer, and they dont throw up stones on the rear arches as much.
The other issue on RFT is that the tyre rubber is almost flush to the rim edge, so the rims on 35 profile tyres are kerbed very easily and the Diamond cut rims cost 3 x that of a standard alloy to refurbish .
standard 19- 20 " alloy £ 50 - 60 to re paint and skim, Diamond cut wheels cost nearer £ 150 each to re cut on a lathe and re paint properly ! The 333 20 " alloys on the 2010 + X 5s also oxidise as mentioned on previous posts here within a year and it appears its a battle with the dealer to get them replaced or refurbished. Hope that gives you some thoughts for tyre planning. If your doing a high mileage i would ditch RFTs when they need replacing and go for standard Goodyear or similar , with a get me home trye in the boot.!
PS why dont RFT s have a rim protection edge moulded on the tyre wall say 5mm proud ?
PPS The guy Peter T who posted here, who got 64,000 K out of his tyres ( 40,000 miles ) he must work for Bridgestone
