The comms screen on my 2003 X5 is slow to load up in this cold weather. It often takes about 5 mins of flashing before I get the BMW logo and then it loads up and everything works fine. It is worse the colder it is. Any one else have this problem? Do you think it is just the cold or might there be something wrong?

Re: Comms screen slow to load up
I have this issue on my '02. It happened last winter, was fine in the summer and is now happening again. I think it is caused by the nav computer as occasionally, if it takes a really long time for the screen to appear, instead of the BMW logo and the normal screens, I get a bright blue, blocky text version of the normal screens that shows all features except navigation.
I kept promising myself that I would upgrade the nav box to a newer one but when it got better as the weather improved I forgot about it.

Re: Comms screen slow to load up
I had a very similar problem with my sat nav screen and the blue text issues last year and a new battery once again sorted the problem.....
It seems that the battery solves lots of gremlins and with the cold being issues for you both, it might possibly point to a weak battery.... Good luck getting things sorted

Re: Comms screen slow to load up
I've had a similar issue on my E70 which is always due to condensation on the Nav Disc. Give it a wipe and it is fine again. It seems that it is trying to read the disc but cannot, causing the computer to re-read it over and over. Might not apply on the E53 but worth a check.

hi
yeah got the same problem with my e53 about 2 weeks ago but i havent even got my sat nav back ! started it up as normal and got the same, old style block letters on the screen and no satnav. went to the boot and tried to eject the disc to see if it might fire it back up but it wouldn't even eject, but the power light is on ? any ideas much appreciated as i phoned bmw and they wanted 6 to 700 quid for a new sat nav unit !!!!!!
thanks

Re: Comms screen slow to load up
One trick may be to pull the fuses for the Sat Nav, wait a few minutes and put them back. Mine's not here at present so I can't tell you ones, but it could be 7 and 41 in the front box.
Easier than taking the battery off for an hour, but that's been mentioned as a trick in the past.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: Comms screen slow to load up
Thanks going to give pulling the fuses a go later tonight ! i have disconnected the power lead from the back of the unit and left it a couple of minutes but that didn't work !
