4.8is - oil service
4.8is - oil service
as I just bought the car recently I'm planning to do quick oil service together with Pipercross induction kit setup. I was wondering what oil did you, mainly from viscosity point of view?
I came across the following on flee bay which http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engine-Oil-Service-Kit-8-litres-of-Castrol-Magnatec-5W-40-C3-/181293278796?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ABMW%7CModel%3AX5%7CCars+Type%3A4.8is&hash=item2a35ebe64cseems a good deal to me. Any comments/hints?

Re: 4.8is - oil service
That oil is shown for Fiat & Renault, not BMW so I'm cautious about the ad.
Also, do you really need a W40 oil? Standard is Castrol Edge FST Professional fully synthetic 0W30 or 5W30. A W40 oil is thicker when hot.
It won't hurt, but the engine will have to work slightly harder with the more viscous oil. Good for quietening noisy lumps by dubious used car sales people though.

Re: 4.8is - oil service
thx... good point. If the viscosity is 'compatible' with BM's engine I have I do not think that is a massive issue. Albeit recommended for may mean that is was appropriately attested by Fiat/Renault rather than BMW. Generally speaking it is a marketing exercise to customize more to trends so as to deliver that 'personal' value to the customer which is very welcomed on today's climate
.
enough rumble... for my ref., what is a diff. from 0W to 5W [if anything]? and thx again for your feedback.

Re: 4.8is - oil service
Some dealers use one, some the other. As you say I don't think the difference is significant in the UK - it doesn't get that cold!

Don't worry. It won't be in there long enough to cause a problem. The 4.8's burn it at a rate of 1 litre per 600 miles, or so I've read.

Actually it was burn 'up to' 1lt every 600 miles but I do agree that is excessive.
