CAR TAX DISC CHANGES - 1st October 2014

Post by X5Sport » Thu Aug 28, 2014 10:20 am

As the Government publicity campaign has been at best inadequate, I thought it might be an idea to out a link to the new system and how it works one here:

VED Changes Oct 2014

It seems when you sell a car after 1st Oct, you can't also transfer the remaining VED value as the new a Owner must Tax it themselves straight away and you will get a refund of the remaining 'whole months' automatically.

I wonder about this part:
From 1 October 2014 (5 October if setting up at a Post Office®), Direct Debit will be offered as an additional way to pay for vehicle tax. This will be available for customers who need to tax their vehicle from 1 November 2014:

    annually
    6 monthly
monthly (12 months tax paid for on a monthly basis)

Provided an MOT remains valid, the payments will continue automatically until you tell DVLA to stop taking them or you cancel the Direct Debit with your bank. Valid insurance should also be in place for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland.

The Direct Debit will be cancelled and payments automatically stopped when you tell DVLA that you no longer have the vehicle, or the vehicle has been taken off the road and a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) has been made.
Is that the same as 12 months / 12 or are they fleecing more for a monthly? Just thinking of my Golf which I would want to SORN 6 months of the year so don't want to pay more than what I need to.

I am wondering it myself.  Currently you pay an extra 5% by DD.  With no disc, I don't see how that can be justified - not that IMHO is was anyway.

There is also the issue that if you buy a 2nd hand car the tax doesn't go with it, which if correct means you would have to tax it before driving it home.

But the dvla will only know about a change in ownership if you tell them via the V5 or if you go and tax the car at the post office so in theory if you buy a car that is taxed and drive it home their computer should show it as a taxed vehicle unless the old owner claims a refund.

Then when you go into the post office the next day say on 5th of the month you'll have to start the tax from the 1st at which point the dvla will know the car is taxed by you and will refund the other person not sure if it will be the complete month though.

Also that is why I assume there are a lot more of those small black camera on the lamp posts to check on this.

Some are full ANPR and some just local authority flow monitors without ANPR.  The blue ones are (or were) Trafficmaster flow monitors.

I think the buying and selling is where they get to make a bit of extra cash from it and as has been said unsure how it would work when you buy a private secondhand car. I think you go online and register yourself and can pay straight away to cover it from day one of ownership.

You will want to always buy a secondhand motor at the beginning of the month so as not to waste VED you've paid for that month, but the seller will want to sell at the end of the month to reduce the amount they lose out on LOL.

That's me being Indian….LOL

so you buy a car on the 10th of the month and they get paid that month twice? once from the owner and the buyer, realy why not just put say 5ppl on fuel and scrap the whole thing along with all the meaningless government funded jobs in the road tax section

Why can't they do it when you buy/sell a vehicle, tax to start on that day and forget all this waiting till start/end of month.

Mainland Europe is on a per-day basis.

Even so that if you go on holiday, you can stop paying road tax for a few weeks.

Simple reason why it doesn't work in our favour - four letters - HMRC.    >:(

I wish all tax could just be on fuel, and thats it. No need for this extra nonsense.

Aren't we taxed enough on fuel? I remember working in Oman, £12 to completely fill my Toyota Landcruiser from empty. Still p**ses me off to about it.

Did mine online and seems easy enough. Wonder if this will see a marked increase in sales of used cars closing on the 1st of the month...

Purchasers would be more inclined to purchase at the beginning of the month to minimise the loss.
