Expanding/enlarging the tank (LPG).

Post by perfectgent » Wed Aug 07, 2013 3:30 pm

53-plate X5 4.6IS with LPG.

I have a 77-litre tank in the spare wheel location and it's great but am only getting 170-200 miles per tank due to 80% usability.

Any options to extend/expand/expandabiggerify it?

Any help mahoosively appreciated as I'm filling the tank at least once-per-week.  I'm not lazy, I just don't like doing things too much.
X5 4.6is (2003 - 53) Black, Auto - totally standard.  93,000 miles.
Mechanically lacking although keen to try.  Also quite trying at times....

Ask me anything you want about kayaking though.

Hi if you look for a post from Jameswhippy he was getting the sliding floor which is higher and meant you could have a larger LPG tank

I managed to squeeze a 102L donut tank which I can fill to about 87L.
Saying that I don't get great mileage though...
On average I get around 150-170miles to a full tank. I did see around 250miles ONCE on motorways and driving economically but then again my heavy right foot doesn't help things :)

That sounds a bit thirsty, I also have a 4.6is and can onlly get 60 litres in my tank.  I get anywhere between 185 & 200 miles out of it depending on how I drive.  Do you mostly drive round town?

Doesn't make any odds with James as his accelerator pedal has been converted to a switch.
Anyone who has met him will contest to this too, either it is on or off.  Great V8 sound though.

I would say 90% of my driving is round town and normally stuck in traffic at the weekends.

Haha Rusty you do make me laugh :)) mind you what Rusty says isn't far off... I blame Jason though ;) since his remap and adjusting the sensitivity of the throttle it does seem like a switch now :).... I am a sucker when it comes to the sound of a V8 which doesn't help my MPG!

I tell you what, I've definitely found myself being particularly benevolent and altruistic when it comes to offering other people the sound of the V8 roar.

It's one of those things; you know when you're waiting at the lights in town and all the dicks have carried on crossing when the red man came up, for them, ages ago?  Then you have to wait while they crawl across the crossing, all this time you knowing that the red light is gonna flick back on any minute and hold up the queue for cars even more?  It's times like that when I feel that the people around me particularly want - no need! - to hear the roar of the engine.

Floor the friggin' thing and scare the crap out of people so they don't wanna chance crossing with the red man lit up any more.  Only if that's your thing - obviously.

I wouldn't do that; this is a hypothetical situation of course.  I just like doing things for other people: it's like me giving back to the community.  See?

easiest thing to do is to unscrew the LPG meter/gauge on the tank and twist the bar slightly to increase the capacity... in essence you would go beyond 80% and can fill in the tank near it's true capacity. So long as you leave 5-10% tolerance to deal with volume 'expansion' which is likely with LPG based based on temp fluctuations you should be fine... for your info, my colleague had been running his 4.6is on LPG for last 4 years and does  fill 60l tank with 60l of LPG w/o issues...

I've got a 83 litre tank in my 4.6is and get about 250 motorway miles max but can do 170 miles if im lucky  :)).

Your prob just better off making sure its running as efficiently as possible,
New air filter,
Iridium Plugs,
Clean / Replace MAF filter,
Get some lighter shoes, especially your right one  :P

Hello Newbie here apologies if daft questions.

On  Landrover's & many others the original tank is removed a Small approx 20l or so petrol tank is installed & then the LPG tanks are fitted under-slung, where the petrol tank was.  This coupled with a doughnut tank would give a capacity increase.

This is something I was considering for a Range Rover Classic project, my old truck.  Which has twin longitudinal tanks but still has the original petrol tank too.

Centurion, could you expand (no pun intended, well maybe a little) on the level gauge tweak please.  Are you saying this is part of a valve which when filling prevents more liquid(LPG) entering the tank & therefore bending it allows the valve to accept, fill more.

Like the float valve on the Toilet (being polite & proper & not using the loo word here) ?

Are you (LPG users) using Flashlube type systems to prevent any degradation due to loss of lubrication form the use of LPG?  Or is this a non issue with the i3, i4.4 & larger engines?

Cheers,

JM HC
