auto tailgate

Post by violet » Sun Oct 26, 2014 6:13 pm

My car apparently has the auto tailgate.  I presume this means when you open it, it should lift up not just unlock and then lift manually.  I can hear it open then a motor  but it doesn't lift unless I do it manually. Been through the manual and doesn't say much.  Anyone got the auto tailgate.  Presume gas struts have gone.  Not too bothered about it but wondered how easy it is to fix?

I don't think they did an auto tai lift on the E53, only the E70/71. I think it means the comfort close which will pull the tailgat upper closed when it hits the latch. Mine had it, I think it's standard on the E53 sport, may be even the SE too.
What is the build date of your car, is it an E53 or a 2007+ E70?

2005.  4.8si.  On a previous add it said it had  electric self opening/Closing.  I couldn't really find anything apart from retro fitted ones.  Maybe it does mean just remote opening not self lifting.

Power lift tailgates came in with the E70, initially as a cost option.  What you should have is a 'soft close' system meaning you don't need to slam the upper tailgate but just push it shut and the motor pulls it closed.
