privacy glass

Post by offshore blue » Wed Dec 22, 2010 1:20 am

Anybody had privacy glass retro-fitted? I would like to get the rear windows done as I think it just makes the car look even cooler. Not sure how much it would cost and has there been any problems after fitting? Also does it affect the warranty or insurance?

You can have them done by the stealers. I know when I was looking the sales guy said if can be done for £200 - £300.
May be worth an ask as if BMW fit then shouldn't be any adverse issues

The film right?

The OEM privacy glass is a dark tint all the way through - upto the B-pillar. Fronts never done as illegal now. But loads have done it without issue.

Tints can be done by anyone decent, the problem is the dark edges with the dotted matrix - film will stick but not very well over this bit and you get that tell-tale misty finish. OEM you won'tr see it.

Raj has commented on getting these bits sanded down to reduce the effect.

£200 to £300 is a reasonable amount to pay...

As highlighted I would be keen to a void the white misting that occurs from air bubbles between film & matrix dots on edges of rearmost 3 windows.
Mine supposedly has tint though it's the lightest I have ever seen and more like a normal factory tint. Avoid cowboys and dont opt for the cheapest installer.

I just got a quote for mine in order you can see the typical likely costs .......................................

Another tint service provider here. Supposedly one of the best though no idea on prices.

If you try them as havent asked for a quote. If you do so maybe share here.

We used to use Pentagon Glass in Enfield for all of our er 'special' vehicles. I think they now have branches around the country. Might be worth a call.

a slight cautionary note: Admiral charged me extra because i had factory fitted tints on rear windows! No logical explanation given.

I wouldn't have told them - it's not a mod so doesn't need declaring in my view. Another reason not to use that company. Aviva told me that anything that was OEM and was not considered a mod if it could be ordered with the vehicle from the factory.

yes... not telling them is a great idea, especially if you just want them to weasel out of paying for your car, or the dozen people you maimed for life in an unfortunate accident....

Everyone's rules are a bit differenet, and they asked the question so not telling would have meant lying.... def not a good idea with insurers.

I agree that its a liberty, but that said, Admiral were STILL the cheapest i could get after extensive searching......

X5Sport is right - if it's OEM then it's not required to be declared. Guy at Admiral told me that today.
